No List No Money
If you have been considering starting your own Internet business or promoting your off line business online for even a short time, you have undoubtedly heard the phrase, "The Money Is In The List".

To the extent that building a contact list of prospective customers is not the only way to make money online, as your list continues to grow, it can become the primary way you make consistent money online, without having to spend additional time, effort and money.

There are several methods whereby you can sell your products/services through your on or off line business using both on and off line promotion, marketing and advertising methods to increase your sales. However most of these depend on you spending more of your hard earned money and/or time than you will if you have a list of pre-qualified prospects and buyers to solicit when you want to build your customer base with new sales or repeat sales from satisfied customers that are already proven buyers.

Once you have built a substantial contact list, E-mail marketing will become THE best way for you to generate sales online or off line.  If you can think of anything easier, (that works as well or better), than the following 3 steps, then I will pay you for your system.

Once you have your e-mail list of prospective and current customers up to the size you are generating at least one additional sale each time you use the following 3 steps, you will never want to stop building and refining your list.

(This assumes you have been trying to build a contact list, you are continuing your pre-fabricated, solution oriented emails going to your list auto-responder email campaign with occasional broadcasts of special interest to your niche without any offers.)

  <li>Write an informative e-mail piece for a new product or special promotion you have coming up with appropriate sales copy regarding your product or promotion and load it into your e- mail system (Auto- Responder).</li>

  <li>You click "Send" to broadcast the e-mail to all you're people on your contact list.</li>

  <li>Your customer's money comes rolling in.</li>
</ol>

That's it! These are the 3 simple steps necessary to generate money on demand. It's like your Auto-Responder becomes an ATM you never have to make a deposit in, but you can always get money out. So is the money really in the list?  Maybe section title would be more correctly stated as: No List, No Easy Money!

Depending on what kind of business you're planning to start, you might be able to get a home business grant money for free. These grants are usually government-issued. They are, effectively, 'free money' - as long as you use the money for what you say you're going to use it for, you don't ever have to pay it back. There are some paperwork, registration forms work at home, business plan, etc. Even if you don't think you would qualify for anything, you might be able to modify your business plan subtly so that you do.

Why Would They Do That?

The money is designed to encourage specific kinds of home businesses - it will always be given to you for a very specific purpose. Also, grants almost never cover the full amount of whatever it is you want to do, leaving you to make up the rest yourself. Note that not all grants come from the government -- some are given out by charities trying to further a cause, or by local community organisations.

Areas commonly covered by grants include businesses that are exporting (every government wants exports to be more than imports), businesses that will provide training to their employees, businesses that are doing useful research and businesses that are providing services and jobs in places that are candidates for 'regeneration'. You may also be able to find extra support for environmentally-friendly businesses, and if you're a woman or a member of an ethnic minority then that could qualify you for a grant too.

Training Grants.

Grants for training are some of the best ones out there -- if you're planning to have any staff, you should really look into them. Basically, you get a grant towards the cost of sending some of your employees on a training course. This is good for you, as you can train your employees more cheaply, and they'll do a better job afterwards. It's good for them, as they learn new skills or improve the ones they have and improve their career prospects for the future. Finally, at least in theory, it's good for the economy, as there will be a greater diversity of skills available in the job market.

Research Grants.

If your business is trying to solve a problem or develop an invention, you might be eligible for a research grant. This can be especially helpful for covering the costs of things like patent applications. Watch out, though -- application for research grants is some of the fiercest out there.

Location, Location, Location.

Whatever kind of grant you're going for, the biggest factor in whether you get it will probably be where you're based. Grants tend to be locally-focused, and especially targeted in areas that are deemed to have a lacking economy. Since you're a home business, you might even find it worth researching what is available in each area, and moving home strategically.

It's Hard to Get a Grant.

Beware of anyone who makes grants look easy. There are all sorts of 'grant agencies' who want to take a fee, and 'guarantee' that they'll get you a grant. They won't - as with almost all things like this, never pay up front. However tempting their offer might seem, you should be applying for the grants yourself, by filling some registration forms work at home. This will generally involve submitting your business plan plus a letter of about 1,000 words saying why you should get the grant in question -- you can't really use the same letter for each grant. Pick what you apply for carefully, as it's a waste of time to apply when you don't meet the criteria properly.

If you want to make sure you're applying correctly, the best thing to do is to phone up the organisation offering the grant -- they'll usually be eager to offer help and advice. Still, don't be upset if you don't get chosen, as it might just be that there were more qualifying candidates than there was money.

Any grant you get is likely to bring you to the attention of some kind of agency or organisation who want to help you in other ways too. They might help you get onto courses if you're lacking any business skills, or even provide a mentor to guide you. This is important. Many people will not buy anything, from anyone, if they do not offer some sort of guarantee. The best type of guarantee is where you offer their money back with no exceptions. This tells people you are credible, honest, and have a strong faith in your products or services.

6. Take Credit Cards

The internet is popular because of the speed and convenience it provides its users. It is important that you accept multiple options of payments such as credit cards, check, money order, or services such as ClickBank, Stormpay, or PayPal. Western Union may be an acceptable method of payment as well, it is important that you provide customers with your address for payments that are other than credit cards.

7. Easy Navigation

Customers want to find what they want, right when they want it. They do not want to end up on pages, with no way back, or out. Make sure that the navigation system on your website is easy to maneuver and understand.

8. List in Search Engines

Search engines are necessary for potential clients to find your websites. Generally, you can do this for free and make use of some of the most popular search engines such as AltaVista, AOL, Google, and Yahoo.

9. Good Content

It is important to provide your customers with good content for many reasons. One reason is for the search engines, it is important to have keyword rich content on your website to enable your visitors to find it quickly and easily. Additionally, good content gives your visitors reasons why they should be buying from you, using your products, and other such things. If it is compelling and honest, you will find an increase in sales.

Lastly, make sure you use proper spelling and grammar on your website. Many users do not like to see errors in any way. If they find errors it must be the webmaster did not take the time to double check.

When the product sells when someone clicks through from your link, and they buy the product, you receive your percentage of the commission. This can also be called Bum Marketing. This type of online business can produce a good monthly income if you choose the right products to sell.

Many moms will write articles about something similar to the product and post it in article directories or on their blog. They use a keyword tracker to find out which keywords are the most targeted and try to find a keyword phrase that is searched for quite often, but has little competition. Then they writer the article around that keyword or phrase and add a link back to the product.

Affiliate Marketing Sign Ups

Many websites offer money for getting people to come to their websites and sign up for a product or a free sample. These companies can offer incentives to affiliates looking to make some extra money. Some will offer ten cents a click and sign up, but some offer as much as ten dollars for a click and a sign up. You can find many of these affiliate opportunities by searching a directory of affiliate opportunities. One such example is Obay, which is similar to paypal.
 
Many moms that have blogs, use affiliate links to make extra money. They can work through many different places to earn a commission. Some have blogs that are just about writing for affiliate links. For instance, they start a blog that is a general blog. They pick some affiliate products to write about and then they insert the links in the articles a few times and leave a link at the end of the article. There are moms that make anywhere from two hundred to one thousand dollars a month this way. That is not bad for very little work.

The nice thing about affiliate marketing is that you only have to do minimal work and the income is generated every month. That means if you choose some great affiliate links, you could have a monthly income forever. This is the best part of affiliate marketing. You are generating income for your future.

Using Amazon and EBay

You can set up accounts with eBay and Amazon to sell products on a blog or website. This just one more way moms use affiliate marketing to their advantage. Amazon allows you to set up an account and design your own display or have it automate. EBay is the same way. You set up an account and choose the products you would like to sell. If someone clicks through and buys from either of these sites, you get the commission.

If you want to make a living working at home, affiliate marketing would be just one way to do it. You do not need any money for start up costs and you can do all the work yourself. If you do write articles to attract traffic and have some sales, you should keep in mind that you can post to as many article directories as you find, but try to stay with the ones that are a PR3 or higher. This means that they have more traffic than those with a PR2 or lower. Try to find one that is not so saturated with the same keywords as what you are using.

Working at home can lead to a sense of isolation. Make no mistake about it; you will have to be proactive on this front. Unless you are perfectly happy to deal with people only over the phone and e-mail, you’ll want to make some provisions for a social life in advance. Keep in mind that some business ideas will have you outside the home more than others, but you will still likely want to come up with a plan to conquer and overcome fears of isolation.

So, how can you make sure your needs for adult conversation, networking and interaction are met? These things can be lifesavers for work at home moms:

• Join A Moms’ Group
  This is a great way to get out of the house and spend some time with your little one away from your new “office.” When your join a mothers’ group, you’ll be able to meet new people and feed your need for conversation. At the same time, you’ll give your child much-needed interaction. Many mothers groups offer a full schedule of activities that you can pick and choose from. Some even offer nighttime events to get you out of the house with just the girls.
• Set Client Meetings Out Of The House
  If you’ll be selling, working as a consultant or doing anything that can get you out of the house, take advantage of the time at least once in a while. Although the plan is to work at home as much as possible, going out several times a week isn’t a bad thing. In fact, can be good for you and your child both. A little chance of scenery and faces never hurt anyone!
• Join Networking Groups
  Take the time to join networking groups, your local chamber of commerce or other business organizations. Do this and you can kill two birds with one stone. Not only will you enjoy some adult interaction, but you can also boost your business at the same time.
• Go To Meetings
  If you will be telecommuting or even working as a consultant, make a point of attending meetings in person once in a while. This will get you out and about and give you some time to recharge your batteries among other working adults.
• Keep In Touch With Friends
  Rely on the same old support network you’ve had for ages to keep you going when you work at home. Call on your friends for girls’ nights out, fun lunches or movies on the weekends. Just because you now work at home, doesn’t mean you can’t get out of the house!
• Plan Date Nights
  Make the time to get out with your spouse or partner. One night a week or even one night a month staked out for working on couple time can be a much-needed change of pace. Plus, this can help keep your relationship fresh and strong.
• Enjoy A Hobby
  Get out of the house on your own by pursuing a hobby you’ve always wanted to do. Take a class, learn to play tennis, just do something that sounds interesting to you on a personal level. Volunteering can also be an excellent way to get out and do something enjoyable. Even an hour a week driving meals to the elderly can have a big impact on your psyche. Keep in mind that doing nothing but working and taking care of your family will burn you out fast. You have to have something that’s all your own, too. Even if it’s one hour a month doing something you love, do it!

Don’t worry that working at home will turn you into an isolationist. You can overcome this obstacle fairly easy.

Essentially, funding a business with loans involves starting out with the books in the red. Still, if your business idea is good enough and your skills are high enough, it can be a great way to go.
• Grants
  It is sometimes possible to obtain grants to open a small business. This will depend a lot on what you plan on doing. If you are eligible for grants, they are well worth applying for. The fact is grants can give you money you need without involving repayments. Government and foundation grants may both be available. Do look into the option, but plan on a big application process. If you are successful in getting grants, make sure the money goes exactly where you said it would, too. Doing otherwise can get you into a lot of hot water!
• Investors
  Family, friends or other acquaintances might want to get in on your business on the ground floor. While this is probably the least recommended option, it can fuel your business dreams rather quickly. Do count on having to pay back these loans or offering up a piece of your business to these “partners.”

Money issues can always be overcome if you have the determination to make it so. Consider your options and move forward with the choice or choices that work best in your case.

If you really want to work at home, you might be tempted by the many ads online and even in newspapers that promise easy work and good money.

It’s hard not to be tempted by these ads and promises. But there are many scams out there, and they can strip you of money, reputation and, at the very least, your confidence.

The most common scam

Yes, this one is still around. You might remember seeing these ads in newspapers years ago, promising “easy money!” for stuffing envelopes. The ads are generally targeted to moms at home, students and retired people. It’s easy to get sucked into the idea that you can make money by stuffing envelopes for businesses, but in reality, you don’t.

You are asked to send money (usually $29.99) and in return, you will get a list if of businesses you might contact to try and get their envelope stuffing business. The reality is that few, if any, companies hire people to stuff their envelopes. And these days, with more and more people relying on online methods to contact potential customers and clients, they need this service even less.

Sometimes people who pay the money will be given information on how to advertise in newspapers and online for people to start an envelope stuffing business. You make $29.99 off these poor people as they contact you for more information.

If you see this offer, or it’s sent to you directly, it’s best to ignore it, no matter how tempting.

How to spot a scam

It’s not easy to spot a scam. If you are desperate to work at home and looking for something that’s already set up for you (in that you don’t have to actually start your own business), you might be tempted by these offers to work at home.

There are several criteria to help you determine if you are dealing with unscrupulous people who are tying to scam you.

First, if an offer promises big pay for easy work, it might be a scam. The reality is that few people can get paid big dollars for easy work and little work. Big pay usually is a reward for big work, so while it might be temping to think that you can get paid big dollars for little work, you have to objectively consider the possibilities there.

Any offer that promises you a lot of work for a fee is likely not on the up and up. You shouldn’t have to pay to work. You shouldn’t have to pay for a job. Of course, some businesses (like businesses where you sell products as a consultant for a company) will require a small up-front investment. In that case, however, you are investing in your own business, not the business of others. You are investing to get the products you need to run your business and that is decidedly different than paying to get a job.

Ask questions. If you get vague answers, or your questions are ignored completely, that should set off a few warning bells with you. You should be able to dig up a street address for the company, the names of the relevant players in the company and you should be able to check the company’s history with the Better Business Bureau and other such agencies.

Don’t sign up for a job or to work with a company without talking to someone on the phone or person. Don’t settle for the information available on a website in the FAQs. Instead, make sure you can make contact with someone you can talk to one-on-one (not in email). If you can’t do that, you might want to look elsewhere.

If you do need to make an investment in product or materials (not for the job itself) use your credit card. Don’t write a check or use a debit card because those will be harder to get protection with. If you use a credit card, you get protection from the credit card company if things go wrong.

Do your research and understand the various risks and rewards of the company you are considering there are many bad deals out there and many scams, but if you do your research, you should be able to find the right opportunity for you.

There is a very valid old saying that goes something like this: "If something seems too good to be true is probably IS."   I would go farther then that to say that if something seems too good to be true then it definitely is not as good as it seems, and most likely is a con or at least some hype trying to influence you into taking the desired action.

Of course there are always questions when it comes to the old 'too good' bit - is it too good to believe in a one-hundred percent return on an investment?  Maybe not if you are an insider or have specialized knowledge or abilities to bring to bear - but if the promoters are promising that anyone who invests will get at least twice their input back then you really have to question why if the investment is that good they aren't going to a bank and taking a loan themselves to keep all that profit for themselves!

Using a little common sense seems to be too much to ask for some people however - everyone wants to find that 'get rich quick' scheme that won't take any time or effort or money on their part. They feel that following a preset process and series of instructions should be enough to make them successful, when a little deductive reasoning should make it clear that if that is all that it took then everyone who can read and has ever investigated opportunities on the internet should already be successful themselves.  The truth is that hard work and effort are the skills that are necessary no matter what the opportunity - and if you don't have or aren't willing to invest these skills then no matter what you try your hand at you are unlikely to see true success, although some lottery winners and exceptions to the rules do exist and seem to contradict this otherwise solid fact of life!

True Lies

Even complete myths and lies can tell us a lot about the people reading and spreading them, but many urban legends and hype or misinformation that exists out there is harder to cull because it contains a kernel of truth buried in the lie.  Many times there are scams that are based on people's fear of being scammed to allow someone to access their information or accounts and indeed take advantage of that person.  A great rule of thumb everyone should always hold true to is to NEVER click a link in an email from someone you don't know, and to never follow an email link to a website you have to log into, especially if it's a site where you have financial information or access funds.  The term used to describe emails and other nefarious methods to try and get information out of you is "Phishing" and it is becoming more and more common. 

A very common trick for instance is to send you a notice of an 'unpaid' invoice or worse yet a receipt for some payment supposedly made from your online payment account.  The first reaction is of course to follow the link to the item and check on it and the payment in question - but often the link actually directs you to a fake log-in site for your PayPal or bank account designed just to gather any user name or password that you enter to allow the person perpetrating the fraud to gain access to your account and clean you out. 

Tricks like these, or "cons" are nothing new - but with the advent of the Internet and high technology the ways that you can be fooled or that a con man can access your personal information

However, because a few of these places thought my answers were valuable, I was invited to phone interviews and teleconference focus groups where I got paid over a hundred dollars for an hour of my time and valuable input. These survey sites usually pay an account online and when your balance reaches a certain point, say one hundred dollars, they'll pay you. Most people prefer just getting paid once a month to their paypal account or by check .

Another popular way to earn extra money for free is by trying out new products or new and improved products where the manufacturers pay well for you to just try it in your home hoping you'll buy it. Of course if you just cancel it within the 30 days or listed time frame and provide simple feedback on the product, you pay nothing. Some people are turned off by what usually happens, you have to give a credit card number just in case you want to keep the service or product and when you return thhe product, you will pay to ship it. However they pay you at least double or triple what it costs to return it so you will net a good income. This method would only be for a few hundred a month but many are looking for just that.

A more lucrative income can be attained by selling other people's products or services. You have no investment cost , but you only take a percentage of sales referred. It seems everyone on the web these days has their own affiliate program. Amazon has one of the largest but you would earn a much higher referral percentage with infoproducts and audios as found at Clickbank and PayDotCom . Yes , referring sales could cost money if you would buy an ad or traffic but you don't have to.

They can pick up their own toys, learn to set out their own clothes and dress themselves, assist in dusting, and even feeding, watering, and walking pets! You should also assign certain tasks to your spouse, such as taking out the trash and lawn maintenance. Putting dishes in the dishwasher, starting the washer and/or dryer and even helping the kids get ready for bed are also great chores that can be assigned to your spouse.

4. When you work at home as a mom, it is important to understand that it is not going to be your typical eight hour work day. You will need to block certain times to dedicate to your work. I say, if you are just starting out, blocking work in two hour intervals is appropriate. As your children get older, and the family becomes more accustomed to your work, you may move that up to three or four hour blocks. 5. Designate certain activities and projects on each day of the week. For example, break up the house work into certain days. For example, Sunday can be your "cooking" day, and you may designate Monday as your "laundry day". There is no rule that says everything has to be done, in completion, in one day.
