With a firm grasp of the type of established business or franchise you would like to buy, you can start actively searching for a business that is up for sale right now. You have answered several questions about your business choices already. Fill in this worksheet to keep your ideas organized:

Got all of that filled out? Good. Now we can move on to the actual searching. Looking for a business to buy doesn’t have to be hard but it can be if you have very specific tastes or know exactly what you want to find. If you don’t find it, it will be all the more disappointing, right? However, if you can take a flexible, open-minded approach to searching for a business to buy then you can open yourself up to a whole new world of opportunities – opportunities that you may never have predicted or even known about until you started your search.

You probably won’t find a listing of businesses for sale. Now that would just be too easy, wouldn’t it? Rather, you will need to do some serious legwork. Here are some great ways to find potential businesses to buy:

Talk to business owners

This may seem obvious, but talking to people who own businesses in the industry in which you’re interested can be a step in the right direction. Owners will have a good idea of where to start looking for a business and can help you get going. Or, you may even run into a business that is willing to sell if you make the right offer! You just never know and that’s why it never hurts to ask.

Talk to suppliers

Suppliers for your business of choice move around in the industry and hear all of the latest gossip. They are the perfect source for getting the inside scoop on businesses that are thinking about selling.

Talk to your lawyer

Yes, you should have a lawyer! But that’s beside the point right now. The right lawyer for your business will have seen and done it all when it comes to business transactions, so what better person to help you make your dreams come true? They can tell you what businesses do when they decide to sell, how to make an offer and how to properly transfer rights. They will be especially helpful when you actually find a business to buy.

Talk to advertising reps

People in advertising also have a clear idea of what goes on in certain industries. Find a print advertising agency or representative and ask them about business opportunities. More often than not, they will share valuable information with you.

There isn’t very much risk involved with a turnkey business since the business has already worked and thrived before you ever owned it. The business model has proven itself to work well. All you’re doing is banking off of the guarantee that it will continue to succeed. However, the really hard part is taken care of: product development, Web site development, business planning, etc. With all of these difficult aspects of business-building that require specific skills and knowledge out of the way, you’re free to set up shop and start making money as soon as the site’s contents are uploaded!

Buying a business can be something of an ordeal. You need to be well-prepared and you need to know what you’re looking for. Probably most importantly, you need to have a set plan for buying a business that is either already up and running or could easily be started with an out-of-the-box set up.

We’ll get to the specifics in just a moment. But it’s important to have a general understanding of the business-purchasing process before taking a nosedive into the more detailed material.

As you already know, a turnkey business is one of the best ways to get started in business. You don’t need all of the planning skills it would take to create a business from the ground up and there is also a limited risk on your part. This means you’ll turn a profit a lot more quickly and you’ll be able to bank off of the previous owner’s abilities and planning skills. Yes, it does sound too good to be true, but you will need to do your part in order for your business to thrive.

In selecting a company to buy, you should keep several things in mind. The “Am I Committed?” chapter is a great place to start in evaluating your own business-mindedness. If you made it to this point, I’m going to assume you passed the test and were happy with your answers to the questions posed in the commitment chapter.

How you go about buying a business will depend largely on the type of company you go for – a franchise or a ready-to-start company. These broad categories will dictate the structure of the remainder of this chapter.

The Existing Business Franchise

This category includes fast-food restaurants and other businesses that are a part of a chain of businesses all overseen by the same company. Individuals are able to buy one or several locations of a business, making it a franchise, offering larger small business opportunities to people everywhere. But just because a business is a franchise does not mean that it is not without its risks. You will still need to treat this business in a professional manner. Even though you are not starting a company from scratch, you still will be laying down a significant amount of money up front, so it will pay for you to do your research and to be prepared for the business transaction you are about to make.

We’ve already covered the legal aspects of obtaining a turnkey business and opening it up under your name, but there are other things you must take care of as well before you can own a business.

How Will You Fund The Purchase?

Most people start their business ventures with a loan from a bank. Of course, securing a loan can be quite an endeavor when you’re starting a business from scratch. You will need to have a detailed business plan and a proven business model. Basically, you need to do everything this side of guaranteeing the loan officer that you will make a profit, meaning the bank will get its money back.

The best way to fund a turnkey business purchase is this same way—a bank loan. However, you are much more likely to be approved for this loan than you would if you were just starting up a business. Why is this exactly? Turnkey businesses have already proven themselves to work. They may have already worked under a different owner or businesses with similar models may have been very successful in the past. A loan officer is much more likely to approve a loan if you are buying a business that is practically guaranteed to be profitable. There’s that word again: guarantee. While there are no real guarantees in business, the more likely you are to turn a profit, the more likely a bank will fund your business venture. It’s as simple as that. Of course, it is always a good idea to have a good understanding of what your responsibilities will be with this new business purchase.

There are pros and cons involved with all types of businesses, but let me just say up front that there are very few cons when it comes to turnkey businesses. We’ll get to the specific benefits in just a moment, but first, consider something:

Everyone talks about the enormous benefits of working from home and owning your own business. It seems like more and more people these days are calling it quits at the old 9-to-5 office job and getting cozy in their home offices. They set their own hours. They are their own bosses! You can’t beat that! But, have you ever wondered what it is these work-at-home entrepreneurs do, exactly?

That’s precisely the problem, isn’t it? People who run their own businesses from home all do different things. One person might sell their special brand of coffee while another might run a comprehensive real estate search Web site. These people had an idea and built their business from the ground up. While this is certainly admirable, not everyone has the drive to do the sheer amount of work involved and the sheer creativity needed to start a business from scratch.

That’s not to say it doesn’t take skills to run a turnkey business. Quite the contrary. You need dedication, commitment, and a vision for success. An established company or a turnkey business puts making a living from home within your reach without all the difficulties and fears of entrepreneurship.
