Is Global Internet Marketing Right for Your Home Based Business?

Some home business owners will be perfectly happy to target their local market and direct customers to a website for further information. The idea that the Internet is a vast expansive field of global connections doesn’t have to ring true. It can be used for small-time marketing too.

If you lack the aspirations to deal with a chap in Hong Kong, or another in Peru - you don’t have to. Using the Internet doesn’t mean that you suddenly have to open your horizons and double the postage stamps on outgoing orders.

There can be no doubting, however, that the global appeal of the Internet can be a very enticing proposition to some. Particularly those who don’t have to worry about working with physical stock.

For example, if you’re making your money selling computer software online, what sense does it make to only advertise to local regions? Digital technology is demanded across the world and it shouldn’t take a rocket science diploma to understand that this can be a very profitable business.

Alternatively, if you’re running a service for say, local swimming pool construction, advertising globally is unlikely to leave you with many useful leads. Unless, of course, you have extreme discounts on air travel.

The important point to remember is that the Internet is a platform. Nothing more and nothing less. It won’t make your business on its own accord, and it probably won’t break it either. But if you have a good grasp of your target market, we believe that the following chapters will set you well on your way to web business riches.

Lessons in Marketing Home Businesses on a Budget

One of the main reason why starting home businesses are becoming more and more popular is not just because of the want to spend time with the family but because of living in a tight budget.

Like any emerging business, it is still unfamiliar to many.  Having a home businesses also needs to add a little pizzazz to them.  Advertising is a key to promote it to the public.

People dread the idea of having to advertise for the reason that it is way out of budget.  Which is really a false impression.

First, advertising need not be costly unless planning and testing is a failure.  Some would have the misconception of chucking in loads of money in one shot thinking that advertising will do the trick. And this left them with nothing.

Second, test in portions.  There are different media to market the business; newspaper, radio and television ads.  One must stretch and take the extra mile to know which one is effective.

Third, arrange for an advertising plan.  Once business is on the groove, it is wise to step up a notch with advertising.  Spending a little bit more is okay but always keep in mind that the supplementary publicity will just double the sales.  Keeping in tune with these circumstances will help make the most from ad money.

Fourth, the best may not really be costly.  Understand that in any business, it is always an advantage to get people talking about what it has to offer.  There are low cost promotion media available .

Word of mouth is, in one word, priceless.  It will not cost even a penny.  Asking the customers as to who else needs the services or products the business offers is first and if they are pretty much satisfied, they’ll be more than happy to pass on the word.

Handing out business cards is another.  These costs around 20 dollars for a 500-piece package.  Some who do networking is also an advantage with the reason that they can refer you to other people, with a referral fee that should not cost much depending on the budget.

Press releases on newspapers regarding any special event or new openings are good for home businesses too.  The most important detail should be included in the beginning and any extra information near the end.

Some local radio and television stations offer off-peak hours ads at a bargain.  Checking them out if any discount exists is okay.  It is not at all bad, it is just not that populated but is never to be underestimated.

Guerilla Marketing Example That Worked

Saint Paul, Minnesota: Before the opening of the first
Crazy Carrot Juice Bar, marketer Eric Strauss engaged
in some forward thinking. He spent $73 to put together
a life-sized carrot costume, which was worn at several
special events around town.

Over the next year, the “Carrot” made many public
appearances. It was featured in various print, radio,
and television media, and became largely responsible
for catapulting the company’s success. Eventually, the
Crazy Carrot Juice Bar expanded to five stores and 65
employees, and was then sold to industry giant Jamba
Juice -- all for a mere $73 investment.

Irvington, New York: The Flying Fingers Yarn Shop,
just outside of Manhattan, was looking to expand its
customer base. At the suggestion of a marketing
consultant, the company secured three giant balls of
yarn, complete with knitting needles, to the roof of a
modified van and called it the Yarn Bus.

On weekends, the Yarn Bus travels between Irvington
and NYC, promoting visibility and making special
appearances at news events. Flying Fingers has seen a
good increase in store traffic, but more importantly,
people who might not make the physical trip to the
store are made aware of their website, where they can
learn about knitting classes offered by the store and
purchase knitting supplies. The high visibility of the
Yarn Bus has produced excellent results.

Manhattan, New York: Even not-for-profit businesses
look to expand their reach. The Marble Church sought a
way to attract younger members and revitalize their
congregation. So, they turned to a marketing firm who
came up with some unusual ways to get the word out.

One Labor Day weekend, hundreds of Hamptons weekenders
visitors to the Hamptons spotted an airplane banner
bearing the intriguing message: “Make a friend in a
very high place. Marblechurch.org.” In addition, the
church rented a low-cost mobile billboard (mounted on
the side of a van) that drove around Manhattan. The
sign read: “In This Town It Doesn’t Hurt to Have God
Onon Your Side.”

These creative messages, delivered in creative ways,
introduced Marble Church to people who would otherwise
never have heard of the place. As a result, the church
reported a 31% increase in membership.

Oregon: Odd giveaways abound. People are intrigued by
the unusual, which may explain why the Les Schwab tire
dealership’s “free beef in February” promotion keeps
customers coming back, or why a nearby bank receives
excellent local media coverage for their yearly
tradition of giving away free Vidalia onions to anyone
who walks in.

How To Marketing Your Home Business Thru The Internet And Attract Prospects Successfully

Consumers are increasingly resorting to the Internet to compare product prices and quality, research companies and buy products online.

Therefore, any home business not making use of the internet to advertise their business, services and products can lose important customers.

It is very simple and cost-effective to advertise online and there are many consultants, software packages, websites and other marketing tools that you can use to create an online presence.

Regardless of the marketing system you use, internet marketing starts with generating traffic or visitors to visit your website, mainly because you are selling a service or a product.

So primarily, you need to create your website in order that you can connect with customers and display information about your services and products.

Turning your prospects into clients through your website can be successfully done with copywriting and getting your prospects unto your website is called website marketing.

Here is how you can market your home business in the internet successfully:

1. Build your website, it should:

• Be easy to navigate

• Fast download time

• Have good quality and informative content

• Have opt-in email

• Encourage Bookmarks.  On your webpage, remind your visitors to “bookmark” your website if they want. If they do, chances are, they will visit again.

• Be regularly updated.  Occasionally provide new resources or information.  Offer freebies like ezines.

• Provide your contact information.

2. Memorable domain name. Look for a specific “domain name” that speaks of your products as well as it is catchy.

3. Post your website in search engines. Nobody will discover your website if you do not announce it. Post it on search engines like Yahoo, Lycos, Excite, Google and Alta Vista.

Finding Advertisers for Your Niche Business Websites

Finding Advertisers for Your Niche Websites

Many who are interested in Internet niche marketing focus on creating websites which either promote products or services which they sell directly or entice website visitors to click on an advertiser’s link. The former is typically considered a commercial website while the latter typically refers to a pay per click website where the website owner profits when the users click on the advertisers’ links. In this article we will examine both types of websites and will discuss options for finding advertisers for each type.

Finding Advertisers for a Commercial Website

As previously mentioned a commercial website is one in which the website offers products or services for sale directly. In this scenario those who operate the website are generally profiting through the sale of products or services. However, this is not the only possibility for revenue. Savvy Internet marketers realize the opportunity for placing advertising on their website. The marketer may still profit from sales through their website but may also profit through these advertisements as well.

One obvious possibility for profit is through sale of advertisement space on the website. In this case the advertiser may pay the website owner a monthly fee to run a particular advertisement for a set period of time. Here the website owner collects their fees in exchange for displaying the advertisement and the profit is not linked to sales generated for the advertiser.

The key to finding advertisers for a commercial website is to select another website which complements your products and services without directly competing for your business. For example a website which sells surfboards and surfing lessons may solicit advertisements from companies who sell bathing suits. This is a symbiotic relationship because the owner of the surfboard website receives the advertising dollars and the owner of the bathing suit website receives the potential for increased website traffic.

When searching for an advertiser it is wise to be prepared to provide them with useful information. Information which will be particularly relevant to potential advertisers is current search engine rankings and recent traffic statistics. This is important because the advertiser wants to know the potential for increased traffic to his website. An advertiser is much more likely to invest in advertising on a top ranking website with high traffic than on a poor ranking website with few monthly visitors.

Finding Advertisers for a Pay per Click Website

Generally speaking, pay per click websites are informational websites which provide content and information relative to the advertisers on the website in an attempt to entice visitors to click on the advertiser’s links. Pay per click campaigns may also run on commercial websites but when this is the case they are considered to be a secondary form of profit.

Finding advertisers for pay per click websites is often a simple process. This process is usually simplified by the fact that the advertiser is not paying the website owner for just placing the ad on the website. The advertiser pays the website owner when visitors click through the link to his website. This lowers the risk for the advertiser by ensuring he is only paying for visitors who actually enter his website.

There are many free programs available, where relevant advertisements are served to websites. Google AdSense is one example of this type of program. In this program, websites are evaluated for content and relevant advertisements are placed on the website each time it is viewed. Some of these advertisements may pay per impression meaning the website owner generates revenue each time the advertisement is displayed but the majority of these advertisements are pay per click meaning the revenue is generated when a user clicks on these links.

There are also other programs available which operate essentially as link exchanges. These programs will require you to display a certain number of advertisements on your website in exchange for each website which displays an advertisement for your website. These programs are very convenient because you don’t have to search for advertisers but the downside is you may not have much control over the advertisements which are placed on your website.

Guerilla Marketing Online

Guerilla Marketing Online

Pay close attention to this article beacuse it
contains marketing tactics that you have probably
never heard of.

Let me briefly mention some very basic principles
covered in the unique marketing system.

Ironically enough, guerilla marketing skills are used
both in large corporations and small business.
However, even though large corporations have
originally grown from small businesses using guerilla
marketing methods, they find the system itself is
better suited for the smaller business.

It’s also interesting that the principle that guerilla
marketing was based on from the beginning still works
today. It’s been determined that it works because it
is founded on how consumers react to a product rather
than on experience or guesswork.

When using guerilla marketing methods, it is best to
combine a number of skills by using the same principle
in various ways rather than to rely completely on only
one method.

This means that you have to be open to different ways
of doing business, advertising and getting clients.

Stay on the cutting edge by using current technology,
budgeting your time and resources, and making the most
of your creative abilities rather than on spending
money.

As you can see from these few tips, Guerilla Marketing
101 can be invaluable to promoting a successful and
profitable business. Click here to learn more right
now!

Not only is this system necessary to any new business
owner, the plan it initiates is in some cases
cost-free, and in this day and age that is rare. It is
the most inexpensive marketing system and yet, it
produces the greatest results in terms of profits. The
best part; It doesn’t require an entire lifetime to
reach your goal.

Sure, it shows you how to gain new customers, but more
importantly it shows you how to keep the ones you
have. When a business has faithful customers, that
business is going to grow. It’s that simple.

Click here and discover this marketing system via
download, as well as 3 free bonus gifts just for you.
You have nothing to lose but profits.

This is only one article that is available in this
series of articles so look for additional ones that
provide more advanced strategies.

New ways to start making your website grow

It’s not often that a “can’t miss” opportunity presents itself. Success is usually 99 percent
perspiration and one percent inspiration, right? When you work with free public data, it’s easy to build a Web business that can make you money without a lot of drudgery.

I can tell you how you can easily start your own moneymaking Internet business – there  are customers out there just waiting to hear from you!

It takes a lot less work than you might think and doesn’t cost very much to get started, either. There are so many great ways to make money from your own website. You’re missing out if you don’t know the secrets of being a net entrepreneur.

You don’t have to be a programming whiz or a web designer to make money on the Internet – all you need is a really good idea. And if you’ve ever said “Someone should pay me for that idea!” you’re halfway there. I can show you where to find the customers that will use your website and how you can make lots of money.

It’s so easy more people could do it, but it takes someone who can see the potential to get the most out of being their own boss. I think that special person is you.

Are you ready to make more money? Are you ready to have fun being your own boss? The Internet is waiting for you!

It’s never been easier to start your own business –  Using free public data such as celebrity addresses or old public domain books.

Let’s say you have your public data source all set up as content on your website  and it’s getting pretty good traffic. At this point, you want to make some profit from it, right? The first thing you need to do is consider what type of revenue you’d like to receive. I’ll describe each type so that you can choose the best one for your website and particular type of data source. While we’re at it, I’ll describe how you can go about instituting each type of revenue gathering to your website.

Adsense Ad Revenue

One of the easiest ways to make a profit from your website initially is by means of ad revenue. We’ve all seen it—those banner ads, Google ads or even text link ads scattered throughout our favorite websites. If over done, however, these ads can be quite irritating and actually detract from the web browsing experience.

But if the ads are used properly, you can make a great deal of revenue while hardly intruding upon the visitor’s browsing experience. First of all, let’s talk about how this ad revenue business works.

When you have ads on your website, the idea is that your visitors will see them. Each time these ads are clicked on by a visitor, you receive some sort of compensation. This will usually be a few cents per click. However, if you are good at marketing and really know how to drive traffic to your website, getting ad clicks should be a piece of cake. And after awhile, you won’t even have to market very much. Your site will go up in the rankings on the search engines, more people will be visiting your site and more people will be clicking on the ads. You don’t have to do a thing but watch the money roll right in.

Article Directories How They Help Your Business

Article directories are websites that house free articles. These articles are usually put there by whoever owns the copyright to them as a promotion method. Each article has the owners byline placed under it so that those who eventually read the article will know who wrote it (or at least who owns it) and will be able to get in contact with or visit their website for further information.

Articles directories are a great place to put your articles so that they will make you money. By using this method, people who are interested in your product or service will see your article, view you as an expert in the subject, and will visit your website. Even if you cannot write or do not have any knowledge on the subject on which you are promoting (for example for you run an affiliate website), you can always hire a writer to do the work for you. Getting quality articles written will be expensive up front, but they will pay for themselves in no time, either through affiliate sales or selling your own services, and everything from then on is pure profit.

Let’s take a real life example. Imagine that you are an accountant working from home. You write an article on an accounting topic and place it on various article directories. Those who are looking for the subject you wrote about will read your article, see that you have the knowledge and skill that is needed to do a job for them, and visit your website or contact you via e-mail. Your article just gained you a new client who may use your services regularly, but will definitely give you a nice profit at least once.

Furthermore, since you have posted it on a free article directory, others who have affiliate websites about accounting will inevitably use your article for their website. Since they must attach your byline to it, this will bring you even more exposure for every website that re-posts your article. This because you will be benefiting of off the traffic that they get to their website.

There are numerous article directories out there for you to utilize. Your bet best is to put a copy of each of your articles on every one for maximum exposure. It will eventually help to bring more traffic and customers to your website, which will lead to new orders and more profit.

Intenet Marketing of Home Based Businesses

Internet marketing means literally to promote, sell and buy services and products online.

Approximate 80 percent of those using the internet, turn to search engines in order to find services, information and products online.  So that is in fact 80 percent of possible customers online for your home business.

Definitely, websites are highly efficient marketing tools.  Internet marketing involves having a website for your home business where you can display your services or product information.

However, simply creating a website for your home business will not produce sales; you need to make certain that users will go to your website. To be effective, they need to be seen, they need online visitors.

Here’s how to build and announce your website:

1. Construct it for fast download.  Online, you only have a maximum of 30 seconds so to get the attention of your visitors.

Your website should download fast, If your prospects can not start reading your product information within that time, then they will head elsewhere.

2. Target your viewers.  Determine who are your markets and make sure your website satisfy their needs.

3. Focus your website.  Be sure it is properly focused on your objectives, which is selling your service or product.

4. Your credibility is important.  Provide a clear “privacy statement”.

Provide also noticeable link unto your “privacy statement” on every page where you are requesting for personal data from your visitors.

Likewise, make available your valid contact information which includes your mailing and email address as well as fax and phone number.

5. Give out a guarantee.  Offer a “no exceptions, money back” guarantee.

6.  Accept credit card payments.  Set up an account with Paypal, Stormpay or Clickbank.

Provide your address for customers who want to pay cash, money order check or via Western Union instead.

7. Uncomplicated Navigation.  Make your website intuitive and easy to navigate.

8. Sign up with Search Engines. Be listed with popular search engines. Many large search engines are not charging any fee on site submissions.

Check out Yahoo, Google, AOL and AltaVista.

9.  Patterned for indexing.  Internet users depend on search engines to find what they need. Maximize your position, by making your content keyword-rich.

10.  Content is very important.  Good quality and valuable content will sell your product.

Your copy should be compelling and need to transport the message that you desire to impart to your readers. It should direct your visitors throughout the course of the sales.

Check and double check always your grammar and spelling.

Now sit back and relax and be ready to receive orders online!

Marketing and Promoting of Your Niche Websites

Promotion is one of the most important aspects of marketing an Internet website. It is through promotion that websites reach the targeted audience. Promoting a website can be done in a number of ways. One of the most popular methods for promoting a website is through optimizing the website to achieve high search engine rankings. Another form of promoting a website is by interspersing website links with insightful comments on industry forums. Inbound links are yet another form of niche website promotion. This form of self promotion has the added benefit of contributing to one of the other forms of promotion by resulting in higher search engine rankings. This article will examine these three methods of promoting a niche website.

Using High Search Engine Rankings to Promote a Niche Website

Optimizing a niche website for particular keywords can be one method of promoting the website. Careful optimization can result in high search engine rankings which act as a form of free publicity. Internet users rely on search engines to provide them with the most relevant content for the search terms they use. Therefore, if your website ranks well in search engines your traffic will likely increase.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is serious business which is often best left to the professionals. Many savvy Internet marketers realize the importance of search engine rankings and are willing to invest in having their websites professionally optimized. Although this is an added expense it is worthwhile especially when you are fighting for rankings and an audience in a very competitive niche.

Promoting Websites through Industry Forums

Forums or message boards are online communities where like minded individuals or those who share a common interest come together to discuss the issues related to their common interest. Participation in these forums is one way website owners can promote their own niche websites. The key to promoting a website while participating in an online forum is to include a link to your niche website in your signature. The other part of the equation is contributing worthwhile information in your posts to give other users a reason to want to click on your links.

Care should be taken to avoid spamming these message boards with your link. Examples would include posting often without adding anything relevant to the conversation and including your link. Other forms of spam may include posting your link in a manner which is perceived as inappropriate by other users. An example of this type of use would be posting your link in response to a question when visiting your website would not assist the user in finding an answer to his question.

Using Inbound Links to Promote Niche Websites

Inbound links are another method of promoting a niche website. An inbound link is a link from one website which directs visitors to another website. Inbound links can be either reciprocal or non-reciprocal in nature. A reciprocal inbound link is one where one website posts a link to another website and in return the other website posts a link back to the first website. Both types of links are looked on favorably by search engines although non-reciprocal links are often given a slight advantage.

These inbound links can be an effective component of a strategy to promote a niche website. Visitors to websites who provide a link to your website are given the opportunity to enter your website. We have already discussed how search engine rankings can be part of website promotion but inbound links essentially rely on the popularity and high search engine rankings of other websites to promote their own niche website.

In negotiating deals for inbound links, website owners should look for other websites which complement their own website and have a similar audience. For example a website selling novelty basketballs might look for websites which sell basketball hoops. Caution should also be used to avoid link farms which do not offer significantly promotional value to a niche website. A link farm is a website which offers nothing more than a list of links to other websites. While these types of links may not be harmful to a website they are also not likely to be beneficial either.

How to Market A Business on the Internet

What is internet marketing? Essentially internet marketing is the means of selling, buying, and promoting products and services using online methods.

Studies show that eighty percent of internet users use search engines such as Google or Yahoo, to find products, information, and services on the internet. With that being said, it means that eighty percent of the online population is potential clients for your business.

Websites is the first line of marketing on the internet. It is without a doubt one of the most important aspects of internet marketing, without a website there really is no point. To have an effective internet marketing campaign, a website is necessary to attract visitors.

While you need a website, it is not the only method of internet marketing. In order to produce sales, it is important that you produce visitors as well. Without online visitors, no one will even know you exist.

Building, then Announcing a Website

1. Create a website that downloads at a fast speed.

Studies show that you have no more than thirty seconds to get your visitors attention. It must load quickly; people do not want to wait minutes for a website to load. If it does not load quickly, your potential clients will become potential clients of others.

2. Targeted Audience

When you begin in internet marketing, it is necessary to understand who your targeted audience is. Once you define the market, you need to create a website that caters to these visitors, satisfying their needs.

3. Keep Focused

You need to establish objectives in regards to selling the products or services you offer. It is important that you always stay focused on these objectives in order to achieve them.

4. Creditability

Without creditability, you have no hope of succeeding online. Make sure you provide your visitors with a very clear, easy to understand, and concise privacy statement in regards to how their information will be used. The link to this privacy statement, must be in a noticeable place, and should be placed upon each page of your website.

You also want to make sure that somewhere on your website you provide your clients with a valid telephone number, email address, fax number, and perhaps an address.

5. Offer a Guarantee

This is important. Many people will not buy anything, from anyone, if they do not offer some sort of guarantee. The best type of guarantee is where you offer their money back with no exceptions. This tells people you are credible, honest, and have a strong faith in your products or services.

6. Take Credit Cards

The internet is popular because of the speed and convenience it provides its users. It is important that you accept multiple options of payments such as credit cards, check, money order, or services such as ClickBank, Stormpay, or PayPal. Western Union may be an acceptable method of payment as well, it is important that you provide customers with your address for payments that are other than credit cards.

7. Easy Navigation

Customers want to find what they want, right when they want it. They do not want to end up on pages, with no way back, or out. Make sure that the navigation system on your website is easy to maneuver and understand.

8. List in Search Engines

Search engines are necessary for potential clients to find your websites. Generally, you can do this for free and make use of some of the most popular search engines such as AltaVista, AOL, Google, and Yahoo.

9. Good Content

It is important to provide your customers with good content for many reasons. One reason is for the search engines, it is important to have keyword rich content on your website to enable your visitors to find it quickly and easily. Additionally, good content gives your visitors reasons why they should be buying from you, using your products, and other such things. If it is compelling and honest, you will find an increase in sales.

Lastly, make sure you use proper spelling and grammar on your website. Many users do not like to see errors in any way. If they find errors it must be the webmaster did not take the time to double check.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Guerilla Marketing

We’ll start with the good stuff:

• Guerilla marketing is cheap. At the high end, you
may end up investing a few hundred dollars in
promotional items or a major, centralized piece that
you can build a number of different campaigns around.
At the low end, it’s free -- and you can’t beat free!

• In addition to growing your business, guerilla
marketing involves networking, both with your
customers and with other businesses. In the process of
executing and maintaining your campaign, you will make
a lot of new friends and allies.

• Guerilla marketing is specifically tailored to meet
the needs of small businesses, whereas traditional
advertising venues are complicated and expensive to
the point of exclusion (bordering on snobbishness).

• Many aspects of creative guerilla marketing
campaigns are just plain fun! You get to perform wacky
stunts and engage in unusual activities, all in the
name of working for a living.

• Guerilla marketing works. If you do your research,
plan your campaign, and stick with it, you will more
than likely end up with a better and more profitable
business.

And now, the bad:

• Guerilla marketing works -- but it is not completely
failsafe. It is, after all, advertising; which is far
from an exact science. The number of variables
involved in advertising guarantees that nothing is 100
percent effective.

• As with any advertising campaign, you will not be
able to pinpoint exactly what works and what doesn’t.
Obtaining measurable results is difficult (but not
impossible, unlike other marketing techniques).

• Guerilla marketing requires a greater level of
dedication and energy than traditional advertising
venues, which often consist of throwing large amounts
of money at other people to do the work for you.

• If you’re looking for a quick fix, guerilla
marketing is not your solution. You will not see
instant or overnight results stemming from your
efforts. An investment of time is required in order to
achieve your business sales goals.

• Guerilla marketing is not for the thin-skinned or
faint of heart. At the very least, you will have a few
detractors who find fault in your methods. At worst,
you may be threatened with legal action (which is why
it’s so important to check your local laws before
engaging in a guerilla marketing campaign).

Effective Marketing: Monitoring Your Marketing Materials to Avoid Fraud

Do you promote client testimonials on your Web site, overnight delivery in banner ads, or other companies' trademarks in newsletters? These techniques aren't illegal, but the way they're used could get you into legal trouble. Thus, you must take a closer look at your marketing materials, or you may get burned.

Today's hot buttons in Internet marketing law include copyright usage, privacy rights, trademark usage and order fulfillment. According to marketing legalese expert Douglas Wood, the rise in Internet fraud and unethical marketing strategies is creating more aggressive legal action to protect consumers. Companies are also more vigorously protecting their brands online. More than ever, responsible Internet marketers need to make sure they're following the law.

Here are some Internet marketing guidelines Wood recommends to keep your marketing tactics away from getting in conflict with the law.

Copyright usage

Online information isn't free to use. And crediting the original source doesn't necessarily prevent a charge of copyright infringement. While short quotes are permitted, it's best to ask for approval and any data-use requirements. Fortunately, many organizations are thrilled to be referenced and will gladly give permission.

Privacy rights

Client testimonials and photos aren't fair game, either. People have a right to privacy, and their names and images cannot be used for advertising purposes without their written consent. For instance, an event planner cannot use a photo taken at a certain event that shows the client or those who attended the said event. Get written approval before you do so.

Trademark usage

If you're a company's authorized reseller or affiliate, you will likely use their trademarks in your marketing campaigns and advertising materials. However, you should avoid using trademarks in a way that may dilute the integrity of the symbol or mark. For example, Kleenex is a brand of tissue, not a synonym for tissue.

Competitors who use a trademark owner's marks and confuse consumers are at risk of trademark infringement and possibly a lawsuit. If you clearly compare your product to a competitor's, that's legal – provided the comparison is with basis and truthful. However, redirecting your competitor's consumers to your site without clarifying that you're not the trademark owner is a big mistake.

Re-evaluate these techniques, if you're using any of them. Also, consider reviewing the marketing tactics of your partners and competitors to ensure your company is protected from their possibly fraudulent efforts, as well.

Competition is okay, but it should not be done at the expense of your own reputation. While fraudulent strategies might not be unmasked immediately and may never be unmasked at all, depending on people's awareness of the law, it is your duty as a responsible entrepreneur and marketer to keep your business on the right side of the fence.

Effective Marketing Strategies for Penny Pinchers

Think you can't afford a powerful marketing agenda for this year? Don't be fooled into believing that only marketers with deep pockets reap substantial rewards. No matter your marketing strategy, there's a group of tactics priced to fit. To show you how to choose the right tactics for your marketing mix, here's a look at a single marketing challenge tackled with high-level, mid-level and low-level budgets.

Imagine your growing business has created a learning toy for a toddler that helps improve motor skills and teach vocabulary, and is priced at $49.99. The broad strategy is to target new parents; ideally those who are most likely to be looking for this type of product and can afford it. And let's assume your product isn't in stores and you don't have the name recognition of major competitors, like Fisher-Price.

With a high-end budget, you can choose:

- Sixty-second, direct-response TV spots on targeted cable programming: long format spots allow you to demonstrate product benefits and keep your toll-free number and URL on the screen longer for maximum response.

- Full-page ads in magazines that target parents, with emphasis on those that reach more affluent readers: large-space ads stand out in a sea of clutter.

- Direct mail to parents nationwide: carefully chosen lists should target parents who most closely match your selection criteria.

With a mid-level budget, try:

- Small-space print ads in the shopper sections of national magazines that target parents. The key to success is finding exactly the right publications, then running your ads consistently.

- Experimental marketing venues, such as craft fairs, in key markets. This gives parents and kids firsthand experience with your product and builds sales and word-of-mouth.

- Exhibiting a major trade shows to obtain retail placements. Once your product is in stores, you can add retail-oriented marketing tactics including radio spots and newspaper ads.

- A PR radio tour. Position yourself as an expert in early childhood development by hiring a PR firm to book interviews for you on select talk-radio programs.

- Setting up a dealer or sales network in multiple cities and offering co-op advertising dollars. Your ad budget would directly support the sales effort in each market.

Even with a tight budget, you can:

- Create a terrific web site. Since most people on the Internet use it to research products before buying, you can woo traffic to your site with pay-per-click ads on search engines.

- Launch an online marketing program. This can include placing ads on sites frequented by your target audience and in the opt-in e-newsletters published by those sites, writing articles for placement on key websites, and sending ongoing e-mail solicitations and e-newsletters to customers who have registered on your own site to receive more information.

- Give workshops and seminars. Link with leading associations or groups, and offer to speak; or host your own events.

- Build buzz. Create contests on your Web site, and put your product in the hands of influencers, like celebrity parents or kindergarten teachers, in select cities to spread the word.

- Use traditional PR. To get press coverage, assemble a press list, send an initial release and follow up by phone; then send those who are interested a press kit with product photos, information and your company background.

Get the idea? Depending on your marketing budget, you can select activities – from high-ticket tactics to others that are virtually free – to create an affordable mix. Multiple exposures to your message in different media will actually help your prospects remember it, so you'll get superior results no matter your budget.
