The following are 10 simple yet very powerful ways to increase your sales significantly:

1. When you make your first sale, follow-up with the customer. You could follow-up with a "thank you" email and include an advertisement for other products you sell. You could follow-up with them regularly. The goal is to begin building a relationship with your customers so you need to keep in constant contact with them.

2. You could upsell to your customers. When they're at your order page, tell them about a few extra related products you have for sale. They could just add it to their original order.

3. Tell your customers if they refer four customers to your web site, they will receive a full rebate of their purchase price. This will turn one sale into three sales.

4. When you sell a product, give your customers the option of joining an affiliate program so they can make commissions selling your product. This will multiply the sale you just made.

5. Sell the reprint/reproduction rights to your products. You could include an ad on or with the product for other products you sell. You could make sales for the reproduction rights and sales on the back end product.

6. You could cross promote your product with other businesses' products in a package deal. You can include an ad or flyer for other products you sell and have other businesses selling for you.

7. When you ship out or deliver your product, include a coupon for other related products you sell in the package. This will attract them to buy more products from you.

8. Send your customers a catalog of add-on products for the original product they purchased. This could be upgrades, special services, attachments, etc. If they enjoy your product they will buy the extra add-ons.

9. Sell gift certificates for your products. You'll make sales from the purchase of the gift certificate, when the recipient cashes it in. They could also buy other items from your web site.

10. Send your customers free products with their product package. The freebies should have your ad printed on them. It could be bumper stickers, ball caps, t-shirts etc. This will allow other people to see your ad and order.

There you go. The great thing about these powerful strategies is that you can implement them immediately. As I said, they are easy to start using but the outcome could be a substantial increase in your conversion and/or buy rate which is the ultimate goal. It is extremely important to make your customer and/or prospect feel special and to provide them with additional value-added items that will keep them coming back.

7. Pay-per-lead

1. Start strong: Your title and initial lines should briefly and directly convey what you want to say. Include the “who, what, where, when and why” in the lead of your press release. The remaining part of your press release should include supporting facts and examples.


2. Make it easy for the media: Some media agencies and journalists will grab your press release and carry it in their publications with slight editing or no alteration. But even if it’s not used word for word, journalists may use it as fodder for other stories or to create their own story ideas. The more information and details you include, the less work the media has to do.


3. Think like the reader: Your press release should be able to keep the reader’s interest. Put yourself in the reader’s shoes. Would you want to read your press release?


4. Make it relevant: Try to point out real examples to support the message you want to communicate. Show why your information is important and how it benefits the reader. If your release isn’t newsworthy, don’t expect anyone to read it.


5. Support your story with real facts: Facts make your point stronger and tell the journalist you’ve already done much of the research for them. If you pull facts from other sources, make sure you attribute them. Avoid fluff and add-ons. And never make anything up. If content seems too good to be true, tone it down or you could hurt your credibility.


6. Include company information: The press release should conclude with a short description of your company, including  where your company is based, what products and service it provides and a brief history If you are creating a press release for more than one company, provide information for all the companies at the end of the release. Also include contact information, both phone number and e-mail, for each company’s spokesperson.


7. Be concise: Avoid using superfluous adjectives, extravagant language, or unnecessary clichés. Get to the point and tell your story as directly as possible.


8. Get permission: Companies can be defensive about their name and image. Get written permission before including information or quotes from officials or associates of other companies/organizations.


9. Avoid exclamation points: The use of exclamation points may hurt your credibility by creating unnecessary hype. However, if you have to use an exclamation point, use only one! Not several!!!

Home Business Time Management Tips

Learning to master time management can make or break your home business. In the early days of your home business, you will still have a lot to learn and as you fill orders, work with customers and businesses; the hours can fly by very quickly. You will discover that there are not enough hours in a day to complete all of your daily tasks.

Efficiently managing your time will help you to create order out of chaos. If you wake up and simply start moving things around without some sort of plan in place, you can easily forget important jobs that need to be completed forget orders, neglect to call back clients and lose customer confidence in your fledgling company.

Plan Ahead

Have a plan in place such as a daily schedule. Follow up that schedule with a weekly schedule that fully covers all of your daily tasks. With this plan in place, you can quickly take stock of your time to figure out what needs to be done. This will help you to achieve your goals by completing important tasks first, and getting through simple tasks with time to spare. Get into the habit of checking, editing and updating this schedule as last minute plans may arise.

This plan will allow you to get your work done without creating a backlog because you accepted too much work in a short amount of time. When new requests come in, you can look at these schedules to see if you have the time to spare or if you should turn down the job due to lack of time. It can be hard to turn away new business or repeat offers but if you accept more work than you can complete in a comfortable amount of time, you will disappoint clients who will go elsewhere when they have new jobs.

Start Business Early

Some people will create a home business to sleep late and work whenever they want to. However, this is not likely to happen. If you sleep all day, no one is running your business and it will not be successful. If you have family as well, getting up early will allow you to take care of them and send off in the morning. You can then shower, eat breakfast and head off to your home office awake, refreshed and ready to work.

Separate Family and Business Life

Spending more time with your family may be one reason that you decided to open your own business, but you will have to keep the two separate to appear more professional and to keep everything organized. If you have young children, keep them away from your home office if possible. If you allow them to play in this room while you are working, they may feel that they can enter it when you are away. This can lead to ruined or lost paper work, schedules and important tasks that you need for your business.

Separating business and family is also a good way to help you to relax and get away from work. When you have completed your tasks for the day, you can simply close the door and go spend time with your family. This is hard to do if your computer and business is in an area that is accessible to the entire household. You want a personal space that you can shut away from the outside world when you are working and away from your personal life when you want to get away from the home office.

Set Priorities

If you do not have your priorities in order, you can end up doing a lot of work and have nothing to show for it at the end of the day. Completing a large amount of work one day, won’t help you if you have forgotten to complete an important and time sensitive job because you did not schedule your time correctly.

Today the Internet is much more than a simple document storage/retrieval system. It is a great vehicle for anyone who wants to setup an online business with little or no money and a want-it-now attitude.

I have a programming background but it was not my technical know-how that allowed me succeed in this area but my trials and errors as an online business owner.

I have tried many opportunities and techniques but it was through my failures I've learnt and consolidated a simple technique to succeed as an online business owner.

I can assure you that, although you will need to acquire some basic technical skills, your success will depend not on your programming or typing skills but more on what you have between your ears.

Below is my list of what you'll need and have to do, to succeed as an online business owner.

1. Have a dream and persistence. If you haven't got a dream and the persistence to follow it through then you will fail, guarantied.

2. Have a mentor. Find someone who has gained the experience in this field. Beg, crawl, wash their car, do whatever takes to become their student. Listen to their advice and learn from their failures and successes. You'll save yourself a lot of time, effort and money not to mention heartache and disappointment.

3. Find a hobby, a 'pet' project, something you are interested in and would do without payment or rewards. If it gets you excited, keeps you awake at nights thinking about it, it will provide you with opportunities to make money from it too. For example, once you have a project/activity that you live for, be it surfing, stamp collection, video games, mobile phones, you could start a local club. Once the club is established you can start a club website. Once the website is up and running you can introduce products to promote the club and your project/activity. You get the picture? You probably have seen the film 'Pay it forward'. Well, you can use the same principle in establishing an online business. Give something valuable first and then you'll get your opportunities to reap your rewards.

4. Promote and automate your project website. Once you completed step 3 above and your site is up and running you want to be able to promote your club site to 'outsiders'. You don't have to get technical and bogged down in programming or writing strings of HTML code. There are brilliant software out there to do a lot of 'skilled' tasks with the push of a button (both free and commercial products). Learn to use them well! Promoting your website should be your priority from now on. Get as many people to come to the site as you can and automate this activity. Start a newsletter to keep in touch with your members and provide them with free advice, tips and news on the subject of your project/activity. And again, automate this too. Get software to automatically distribute your newsletters and automatically sort any emails you get in reply to your posts. Set up autoresponders signup new members and to respond to email queries; automate, automate, automate...

5. Once you have enough members and you have an established, loyal group of followers, you can introduce your promotional products and other services that you now want to sell and make money from as a business. You'll have to be gentle and do this bit by bit. You may also find it useful to have another, separate, commercial site for this purpose and simply direct your members there from your 'signature files' or 'letterheads' you send out as part of your club newsletter. By now you should have enough experience in setting up and running a website from step 3 above. If you did have a separate commercial site you run a smaller risk of offending 'purist' club members.

6. Review the operation of your site, experiment and test the effect of site layout, content, headlines etc. Review and look for opportunities to further automate anything that you can to make your site 'self-sustaining'. If you do this you should be able to get yourself more free time to actually enjoy your hobby/project and to go out and look for more new material (advice, tips and news) that you can send out to you members. Once you have a website running and are making money out of it, it is very easy to forget that without new content and looking after your members your business will not survive. So make sure that the time you have freed up by automating your processes, you put back into searching for and providing fresh content and keep on provide a service to your members and keep in mind that they are members because they share your enthusiasm for the hobby and not for your business. You include a HTML code to your web site and each time somebody visits the site where the HTML code is placed a banner will be displayed and you get some credits (usually 1/2 - 1 credit depending on the exchange ratio). For each credit you "earn" your banner will be displayed on another banner exchange members page. This type of promotion is good for branding but it will increase your traffic just about 0,1 - 1 % only (depending on click rate of your banner) so always combine this method with another strategies.

5. Promotional coupon codes:
Everybody is happy for a free gift or some discount and a lot of online marketers take advantage of this fact. So why don't make your customers happy too? There are many promotional coupon code directories on Internet. Put your coupon code to most of these web sites. Try combination of promotional coupon codes strategy and affiliate marketing. Give away to your publishers promo codes or special affiliate link. If the visitor click this link he gets some discount, free gift, free shipping or another benefits.

With the advent of Google losing a court case (and a shed load of money) and the continued problem of click fraud the question is now on the tip of everyone’s tongue – “Is Google Adsense still the cash cow that it was?”.

In this article I’ll take a look at ways in which the average webmaster may still develop a successful Adsense business and how to use the up and coming Google witch hunt to your advantage.

There are currently two main problems that are facing Google, both of which are serious and could lead to the demise of both Adsense and Adwords.

The first and most serious problem is that of click fraud. For those of you who do not know click fraud is the act of clicking on your own (or a friends) ads in an attempt to generate artificial earnings.

This is such a problem for Google as it ensures that the value that Adwords purchasers gets is significantly less then they would want, thus ensuring that sooner or later they will just get up and walk away (with what remains of their advertising budget firmly clamped in their hand).

To remedy this problem Google have tried putting several rules in place such as not allowing the webmaster to show Adsense ads in auto surf sites (to name but one restriction).

The second problem that Google faces relates to content, notably the amount of original content which is out there.

The problem in this case is that many people have purchased article scraper software (software that you point at someone elses website and just shout ‘Fetch!’ – it then returns a document collection which is a complete rip off of the site).

This was already a problem before the advent of Adsense sites and with the continual chain of people chasing high value keywords it has become worse; It is now possible to search for a given phrase on Google and return nothing but duplicate content for the first few pages of search engine results.

In order to address this problem Google has been modifying it’s algorithm to effectively punish people with duplicate content, the extent to which an individual site is ‘penalized’ is currently a matter for debate.

So, given Google is about to launch a witch hunt looking for sites with nothing but duplicate content and for people performing click fraud what can you do?

After all there are so many people out there using site generation tools that Google can trace and/or document obfustication technology (you’ve seen the ads – “We can make your one original article into 300 and Google will never know!” – yep, and anyone who visits your site will just find drivel with spelling errors or contextual mistakes).

Step 1.
If you must use site generation software make sure you find one that leaves no trace behind itself, ask yourself – ‘If I was looking at the source code from the generated page how would I know that it’s machine generated?’

Step 2.
Don’t use site scraping tools, they're immoral and a waste of your time

Step 3.
Do include RSS feeds into your pages, they add fresh content with no effort on your part (at least one of the site generation tools now supports this kind of functionality)

Step 4.
Don’t click on your own adverts, Google will can you in the blink of an eye

Step 5.
Do get incoming links from established sites (in the same area as your niche content)

Summary.
If you are at all serious about creating an Adsense income you need more than one site and so it is inevitable that you will use site generation tools (because there aren’t enough hours in the day for you to create the amount of pages by hand), by all means use these tools but use them ethically.

When using site generation tools ensure that they allow you to add multiple blocks of Adsense /Clickbank /Ebay code to each page (it saves you a lot of time) and that it performs search engine optimization for you (both on page and off page).

You should also take the time to write some of your own original content – like this or perhaps pay a ghost writer to create a batch of articles for you (don’t forget to ad your bio box at the bottom of everything you write).

To answer the initial question, yes, it is still possible to make LOTS of money from Google – you just need to be careful.

This is rather easy to achieve on the Internet. In fact many people managed to profit from this system in the 1990's when Google introduced AdSense and AdWords.  Many people (Mainly stock traders at first), immediately saw the potential for arbitrage in Google's systems and started driving traffic through Adwords ads to high paying Adsense ads on their sites from that very same traffic they were buying through Adwords.  HOWEVER . . . .

 

Using this system, many people became rich overnight. But after maybe 6 months, Google figured out about what these "Ad Traders", were doing and decided to ban this technique from being used through their advertising systems. Now all systems that are similar to Google's Ad systems got savvy to the arbitrage techniques.

 

Therefore it is very difficult nowadays to get any low cost traffic to high paying niche ad sites either from search engines, AdWords or any other system, because the search engine’s and Online Ad Firm’s systems are now programmed to ferret out Ad Arbitrage!  But I stumbled upon an even more efficient way to use the Advertising Arbitrage technique, which is even easier and less complicated.

 

Bidvertiser.com is the website I will be using here in my examples. I chose bidvertiser.com because it was so easy to register with them, and they are not so fussy about paying directly to your PayPal account on time every month.  I suggest using webwire.com for press releases to get traffic to your site, though you may alternatively use PRweb.com - As well you can use Bidvertiser.com and AdSense on your website instead of just Bidvertiser.com, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are driving traffic to your site with Adwords.

 

First, we want to break down the system that has proven to work for many other people into its basic components:

 

1.     Attracting traffic

2.     Monetizing your websites

 

It's as simple as that. You are going to pay someone to help you attract traffic to your niche website, and then you are going to monetize your web pages so that the traffic generates more income than it cost to generate.

Recession?  Seriously? 

Okay, fine.  The market is having some troubles.  What do you do?  Do you cower in fear, doubt, and uncertainly like the masses or do you…please forgive me for the cliché; do you make lemonade from lemons?

It’s true.  Right now we’re living in some pretty uncertain times financially speaking.  However, there’s always opportunity.  The online world is still thriving.  In fact, it’s growing.  The self help and home based business is booming!  The investment market is actually thriving – people are anxious to learn how to invest their money, protect their money, and still live the same quality of life they’re used to. 

Warren Buffet just invested 5 billion into Goldman Sachs.  Of course he had 5 billion to invest in the first place but this is a guy who isn’t casual with his money.  And he just invested 5 billion in what many would consider the most unstable sector in the world. 

Why?

He sees an opportunity.

It’s what successful entrepreneurs do.

Successful entrepreneurs are typically risk takers.  Not blind risk takers who jump into a pool of hungry sharks without looking first. 

Instead, they spend a bit of time evaluating the risk and then deciding whether it’s worth jumping in.  That doesn’t mean that every single light is green and it’s 100% okay to make the jump, or investment.  But it means they know what they’re getting into.  They understand the risks.

Along with understanding the risks, successful entrepreneurs understand, and look for, opportunity.

Think about Amazon, Paypal, and even the folks over at MySpace.  They saw a potential opportunity and took some very big risks – boy did they pay off. 

Despite what the mainstream media will have you believe – those opportunities are still available.  The only difference between five years ago and today is the collective consciousness – if the media is telling everyone that the economy is good and invest, invest, invest – the collective buys into it and boom – everyone and their brother are taking huge risks with the comfort that the financial guru they saw on CNN the other night said it was a good thing to do – the economy is great.

Now the same financial guru is telling everyone to buckle down.  Save money, don’t spend.  Hold tight to your investments.  Don’t take any risks. 

And the collective conscious believes it.  They hold tight to their money.

The result…missed opportunity.

Assuming you do your homework, analyze the market, and understand the risks – the risks are the same as it was 5 years ago.  The opportunities are the same.

What is required to recognize and take advantage of these opportunities?

A good attitude is a must.

A good attitude means you’ve established the desire to be wealthy.  Now that may sound very simplistic.  Everyone wants to be wealthy, right?  No, not really.  Some people are quite content at their current income level what ever it may be. 

And many of those who do desire great riches let other desires, beliefs and myths about money get in the way.  Napoleon Hill outlined six steps to achieving Desire as it relates to attaining wealth.  They are:

#1  Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire.  (This is very much part of the visualization and goal setting process and is critical to success)  At first you may think, “Oh okay, I want a million dollars.”  Then you’ll think, “No, this is a visualization exercise, right?  How about six million dollars?”  Then the doubts will start to enter your mind and you may drop down to $100,000.  The goal here is to let go of those limiting beliefs.  If you want six million then fix that amount in your mind. 

Perhaps you need to do a little bit of thinking, meditating, or even planning on how much money you want.  That’s fine.  Take your time.  It’s important that you’re comfortable with the number you’re seeking.

#2  Determine exactly what you are willing to give in return for the money you desire.  It’s the old you don’t get something for nothing philosophy.  This is actually a great way to help let go of your limiting beliefs about money particularly if they relate to money being inherently bad.  What would you do if you achieved the monetary goals you’ve set forth?  Will you donate a specific amount to charity each year?  Will you volunteer your time?  Will you employ people and offer a great salary and benefits package?  What are you willing to put out there?

#3  Establish a specific date for receiving or earning the money goal you’ve established.  Tomorrow, right?  You’d like that six million dollars tomorrow, please.  Okay, now step back and consider what may be more reasonable.  Not too reasonable mind you, you probably don’t want to set your goal 20 years in the future however 12 months isn’t unreasonable is it?  Neither is six months, or even three. 

#4  Carry out a plan to begin – Mr. Hill recommends taking action whether you are ready or not.  You can’t spend your life planning, it’ll just pass you by.  So how are you going to make this money?  What’s going to happen or change in your life to make it happen?  Are you going to write the next Harry Potter?  Are you going to develop a software product or game that sells out all over the world?  What skills, talents, and knowledge do you have, or you have access to, to make it happen? 

#5 & #6  Create a written statement for the first four actions described above and then read it aloud twice a day. Once when you’ve just woken up and once before you go to bed.

This process as it was laid out by Napoleon Hill in 1937 and supported by wealth coaches, personal coaches, professional coaches and mentors all around the world, may seem a bit simplistic at first glance.  However, upon implementing it you will see it has a very powerful effect on not only your attitude but your motivation as well. 

Visualization is a technique that successful people in all walks of life utilize to improve and to achieve their desired results.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a stay at home parent who aspires to build a six figure business or an Olympic athlete – visualization and establishing a desire to achieve are a necessary first step to real success and wealth. 

An economic downturn matters.  Of course it does.  However, where there’s the desire to succeed, where there’s openness to success, wealth, and the power of opportunity, there’s a real chance to profit – desire is the first step.

 I'm often asked, "I have no video training but I want to put video on my website to help promote my products and services what can I do?" Well the answer is simple. If you can shoot a home movie you can put a video clip on your website. Now the first thing is to not be scared of the camera. A good sales person needs to be able to speak clearly and present their product in a manner that everyone can understand and enjoy. So with that in mind turn on your camera, cell phone, or whatever video capturing tool you have and begin shooting. But here are a few tips for making your shoot successful and getting it up on your website.

1. Speak clearly, and so that everyone watching can understand what your saying and what your product is about.

2. Make sure you have enough light so that you and your product can be seen. But be aware that you can also have to much light. So the best thing to do is to test your video and the area your going to be shot in. Make sure you look natural.

3. A microphone is important and you need to be heard. If your using a mini-dv camera you can easily get a microphone that can attach from the camera to your clothing. Use make sure you can't see the wire that connects the mic and the camera during your video.

4. Have FUN! No one wants to see a sour face on camera. So make sure you are having fun and that you SMILE. The better you come across on camera the more people would want to buy your product or services.

5. Don't use big words in your video presentation. Keep it short sweet and simple.

6. Once you've finished your recording, watch it. Make sure it's what you want and something that you'll feel proud to have on your website.

7. Now get the clip to your computer. Your camera will have instructions on how to upload the footage. Now you can get fancy and use one of the high end video editing products. But those take a long time to learn. So if your on a PC use Windows MovieMaker and if your on a Mac use IMove and edit your clip to your licking. Don't use to make crazy effects keep it about you and your product.

8. Now once your clip is edited you need to output it to a web file. If your on a PC then output the file to a WMV. And if your on a MAC then output your clip to a .MOV file.

9. Upload it! If you don't have server space then use http://Video.Google.com or http://Youtube.com. You can easily upload your video to these services. Not only will you have the code to embed the file to your website but you will also allow others to see your video and your product who haven't been to your site yet. It will be as easy as CUT and PASTE to an HTML page.

10. Promote your video clip. Include links to your clip in your weekly newsletters. Send your clip to your friends, family, and business associates. Let them see the work you've done and ask them to pass it on to other friends. Son you'll notice that you have a ton of visitors watching your video and more traffic to your website.

 The lifeblood of any Internet marketer is their list. If you have an opt in email list then you are sitting on piles of cash, if you properly use your list then your earning potential is very high.

As many people ask "How do I build a list?" the following points describes some of the best ways for building your email list.

1) Newsletter / E-zine

We are in the Information Age and so people are desperate for information. Everyone is so busy with their lives they don’t have time to find the information for themselves. Publish a newsletter in your niche that is full of valuable content and you will get people flocking to you to sign up.

If you have a website about a topic you enjoy, you can make money from discussion forums. Talk, post links to your site, get traffic. Traffic means money, right? If not, try different affiliate programs or Google Adwords. The worst sites should get a couple cents per visitor. Now here's how to talk and make money.

Search "forum" plus the topic of your site on Google or Alta Vista. For my first site, I searched "backpacking + forum" and in the pages of results I found several good forums. I also searched related topics like "hiking" too. You can also check about.com, and other sites that have forums on many topics.

Registration is usually giving your email address and choosing a password. Some forums allow guests to post without registering. Once registered, browse the forum topics, and post a response to anything, just to "learn the ropes".

Income From Discussion Forums

The point of posting in forums is to get readers to come to your web site. Sure it's fun to give advice and discuss things of interest to you, but that's secondary. With that in mind, do the following:

1. Always link to your site. If they don't allow any links, find another forum.

2. Don't "spam." Sales pitches will be removed. Offer honest advice, or express an opinion, then sign off with your name and the link to your site.

3. Ask for help from others. This is an effective and acceptable way to "advertise." Enter a topic like "Can I get some advice?" and post something like, "I just started a meditation site. If some of you would visit and tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it." Have a link to the site. People love to help, and to give  opinions, and they'll click on those ads while they're at your site.

4. Look at total "views." Many forums show the total times each "thread" has been viewed. When you see some with many more than others, get in on those, or start a new thread on the same topic. Go where the traffic is, and get some of it.

I didn't like the idea of forums until I made a few posts, and saw my traffic and revenue climb for days afterwards. That convinced me. Just be polite, offer some value to others, and always have a link to your site. Many other secrets of using forums are covered in my newsletter, but this should be get you started. Creating your own Streaming Audio audio studio has never been easier. There are so many great products around today that will allow you to produce high quality streaming audio for a fraction of the price it used to cost.

HARDWARE

The first thing you will need is a compatible computer. Today every new computer is already set up with everything you will need. A basic sound card with a mic and line in jack. If you do not have a sound card they are very cheap and you can get a good one from any standard computer shop.

Next you will need a good mic. These come in all sizes and shapes with different configurations however a general all round mic like the Logitech Noise-canceling microphone is fine for beginners. I suggest you get a desk top one to start with, as you may want to move into video later and so you wont want a headset in your videos.

Of course you could go up a stage and get a preamp with a professional mic but this will start running into dollars and the whole aim of this article is to help you get started.

Next you will want to get some cables to connect up your tape recorder and other audio equipment. Again the computer stores now have packs that will connect up pretty well any device into your computer to digitalise your sound. You want to record directly onto your computer however you can get those old tapes and Vinyl records into a digital format also.

SOFTWARE - RECORDING

Recording your audio is probably one of the most critical parts of this process and again you can get software that ranges from free to many thousands of dollars. For this exercise I suggest you download the free copy of Audacity. This is an excellent free software package that will allow you to record from your microphone or any equipment you have.

The next piece of software you will need for your studio is a converting program that will allow you to convert different formats. If you find a sufficiently young and resume-poor actor or actress through online creative services sites (Craigslist being a classic option) or through other channels, you can often convince them to do a day or two of shooting with you for nothing but the experience of being on camera and a good letter of recommendation to future potential employers.  There's plenty of talent out there waiting to be discovered, and there's no reason to let it lie fallow when you could put it to work for you or your project for almost nothing.

If you live in a rural area or just don't have a good local talent pool, you'll have to use someone in house.  There are endless books written about the difficulty of casting, but as a general rule, pick someone with a pleasant, friendly face and pick someone who's easy to understand.  It'll make your content seem more professional and it'll provide a more positive emotional branding for your product.

And if you simply don't have other options, don't overlook the power of testimonials.  Get some friends of yours who've used your product and who like it to let you record them talking about how much they enjoy the product.  In this case, their lack of technical acting training is an asset: it'll give your production an air of authenticity and make the testimonials that much more convincing.  Plus working with friends is an all-time good deal, since they'll most likely be excited enough by the prospect of appearing in your "commercials" that they'll work for friendship, or for free.

Will Video Kill The King - Text Content ?

The answer is: yes and no. 

It's still impossible to build a website without grounding it in textual content, first and foremost.  It doesn't matter how flashy your Flash menus, embedded video solutions, or audio tricks are if you don't have the basic content to back it up.  Give web users some credit: they're not zombies, impressed by the latest flashy devices.  They go to the Internet in the first place because they're interested in information.  If they're online in order to shop, they're going to want to know as much as possible about the product they're buying before they buy it.  If all you give them is a well-crafted video of the product with stirring, high-quality music playing behind it, they may well be impressed by your audio-visual techniques.  And then they'll leave without buying the product.

Textual content also has the significant advantage of being searchable.  If you've sold products online before, you know that one of the key components of success is your page ranking on popular search engines.  Having your page come up consistently as the first result on Google searches is similar to having a front-page ad in a major newspaper: the number of people you can reach is astronomically higher than it would otherwise be. 

Google and other search engines archive their pages by sending "robots" to web pages to crawl through the text, to determine via sophisticated algorithms how relevant a keyword is to a page in context, and to then rank pages according to their relevance.  If your page is full of images of your product--even images with lots of dynamically-generated Flash text or other informational diagrams--Google can't search it properly, and you're not going to get the page ranking you want. 

Good, relevant textual content is still the key to promoting your products and services online.

And in the end, consider this: text is still faster and cheaper to transmit than any other medium.  The difference isn't quite as dramatic anymore, but it's still significant compared to audio and video.  An mp3 file of reasonable fidelity takes up roughly 1 MB of memory and bandwidth per minute.  That's a thousand times more bandwidth cost than even a 1 KB image, which is itself a thousand times more costly than a word of text.  In other words, audio files are millions of times more time-consuming and expensive to transmit--and video files are much more dramatically expensive still.

Your sales letter, whatever form it takes, is the key to succeeding with any direct sales site on the Internet.  It articulates specific information about your product to help your customers make an informed decision, it allows you to include additional convincing details (testimonials, case studies), and it's a low-pressure approach to sales, which, believe it or not, is the right way to go when selling products online.  And it's possible to completely override your traditional text-based sales letter with audio-visual content.

You might include a video testimonial from several satisfied customers, or a full hour-length infomercial on your product's features and the reasons for buying it.  But by doing so, you'd be losing these three critical things: reader attention and credulity, search-ability by Google and other page ranking services, and low bandwidth costs.  You suddenly have a harder time keeping your customers interested in your products, a harder time making customers aware of your products in the first place, and a harder time making bandwidth payments to your hosting service.

That's not the right way to run a business, and it's not the right way to use audio-visual techniques on your website.

Audacity will let you take your raw audio track, tweak it however you might want, then re-import it as an mp3 or other appropriately-formatted file into your video editing package.  If you can find a package that gives you good integrated audio editing as well as video editing, by all means use it, but if you can't find a package that works for you, try this free solution.

You want video editing software that makes it easy to preserve your raw footage while still experimenting with different cuts, arrangements, and music mixes.  Traditional film editing is destructive, requiring an editor to physically cut the film and splice it into different arrangements. 

There's just no reason to accept this restriction when you're dealing with digital video, which after all is just data and which can be easily manipulated and rearranged.  Most commercial video editing software is non-destructive, so this isn't a huge thing to worry about.  But if you see any video editing software that emphasizes memory conservation, speed, or similar features, you should double-check to make sure that the software is non-destructive. 

Non-destructive solutions preserve your raw footage by making a backup copy and allowing you to edit and manipulate that copy without touching the original footage.  This is safer, but means that you have two gigantic movie files in your computer's memory.  Accept the tradeoff in terms of speed and memory and pick an editing solution that preserves your original data: you don't want to have to reshoot anything just because you tried to get a little bit creative with your editing.

You want video editing software that makes it easy to tweak and polish your footage to ensure that it looks as good as possible.  Color correction, precise timing, control over the speed that footage plays, and the ability to hand-edit individual frames to fix minor problems are all nice features to have, are generally easy to use, and translate into a much tighter and better product in the end.  The ability to color-correct shouldn't be the major determining factor in which video editing package you choose, but if you can get it without spending a significantly higher amount of money, get it.

Video Editing Software You Have Of Might Consider

Windows Movie Maker

If you're running a modern Windows computer, you're on a serious budget, and you don't need much control over your final product, you can always lean on Windows Movie Maker.  WMM is bundled with Windows Vista and some versions of XP, interfaces easily with most cameras, is non-destructive, and provides final output to a variety of file formats.  For many short video projects--a reel of testimonials, a series of shots of a product, or a quick demonstration of product features--it can be a good stopgap solution.

But for more elaborate projects, WMM falls seriously short.  The "storyboard" style editor is a drag-and-drop solution, yes, but it doesn't allow you to manipulate the actual video "track" directly.  The best you can do is assemble "scenes" in a specific order, add some audio information, export it and call it a wrap.  There's no possibility for color-correction, for tight cropping at the beginning and end of individual scenes, or advanced effects like chroma-keying or transparency.  If you've got a simple project, try this.  If you want to really stand out, though, try something else.

Or You Might Consider Sony Vegas

Sony Vegas (currently at version 8) is the gold standard by which video editing solutions are measured.  It fits most of the criteria on the list which started this chapter: it's intuitive, it's drag-and-drop, it features a high-end audio mixer, and it gives no end of options for optimizing video quality.  You've even got a comprehensive package of effects, transitions, and software for creating titles, credits, or flyover graphics.  All of this saves you both money and time by letting you do all the work you need to do to achieve your design concept within a single software package (rather than editing your video in one suite, then transferring it to another suite in order to add in effects or animations.)  Add to all of this a good variety of export formats and some extra compatibility features with Sony camcorder products and you've got yourself a reliable, powerful, and ultimately simple solution.

What's the drawback?  It's a professional piece of software with a professional price of around $500-600, depending on where you go.  If you plan on creating plenty of audio-visual content for your current direct sales project and for direct sales projects in the future, that initial investment will probably pay for itself in a reasonably short time.  But if you don't have grand ambitions and you don't plan to do much video or audio editing in the future, you can probably use something else.

PowerDirector

A good "happy medium" between the super high-end Vegas Pro and the bare-bones Movie Maker is CyberLink's PowerDirector 7 Ultra, voted most popular at video editing sites around the web (including an Editor's Choice award at PCMag), and a bargain at only around $100 for a license.  PowerDirector is largely used for DVD authoring, but still gives you export options for web video, good compression algorithms, a comfortable work environment, and lots of extras. 

There are a few blind spots--most notably the lack of good support for chroma-keying processes--but in a pinch you can use free, third-party editing software to get quick chroma-key effects, plug the footage back into PowerDirector, and use it to control your edits and splices and finish your project.  In other words, you may have to spend time learning to use an additional program in order to finish your project, depending on how complicated your original concept is.  But for the majority of projects with a quick turnaround time, PowerDirector provides an adequate solution and a good place to begin on a budget without relying on much sketchier freeware editing solutions.

Actually filming your audio-visual project is extremely complex, the subject of entire film school courses, and well outside the scope of this book.  There are a few key principles to remember, though, in order to save yourself some hassle later on: shoot multiple takes, make sure your key images are large and interestingly framed, and shoot enough footage to give yourself some leeway in editing.

Shooting multiple takes is just common sense.  You might shoot what you think is a perfect take of a testimonial, leave your shooting location to plug your footage into your video editing software, and find out that your microphone wasn't plugged in correctly and didn't pick up any sound whatsoever. 

Or you might find that your sound levels are fine, but you've inadvertently cut off one of your performer's heads or even your product's logo.  Or you might find any number of things that would have been easy to fix while you were actually shooting--but you're not shooting any more, and to go back and reshoot will cost you money and time.  So shoot multiple takes, even if you don't think you'll need them: better to be safe than sorry.

Framing your images is a huge film-school subject, but here are a few guidelines: make sure that whatever the subject of the scene is fills up most of the camera frame, and try not to center your images too closely.  If you frame your subjects too loosely and leave too much of a blank border around your image, you're wasting space and you're making your footage look much less interesting. 

Why would you want to film the walls of your garage when you could be devoting that space to a bigger close-up of the new power tool you've invented?  The rule about centering is less vital, but it's still a good trick to remember: placing your primary subject slightly away from the absolute center of the camera's focus adds visual interest to your footage, engages your viewer's attention, and makes your audio-visual presentation much more interesting.

But some of these issues are just icing on the cake.  Your basic concerns with video recording are simple: make sure your images are clear, make sure you can easily transfer your footage to editing software, and make sure you leave yourself plenty of leeway when it comes to editing.

To really use audio-visual solutions to their best advantage in your direct sales website, you need to play to the strengths of audio-visual solutions.  Those strengths are:

Showing, not telling
Providing an emotional experience to influence sales
Not overstaying anyone's welcome

What does this mean in practice?  Imagine two direct sales concepts using audio-visual techniques.  They're both selling the same product: a lawnmower attachment, we'll say.  In one concept, the company's owner sits at a desk and talks to you about the advantages of the attachment in terms of durability, effectiveness, and price.  In another concept, we see a young boy mowing the lawn.  In a series of quick cuts, we see a young man, then an older man, then a senior citizen, then a venerable grandfather--smiling as he watches a young grandchild mow the same lawn, in each case using the product.

It's just obvious that the second concept is better, but why?

First: it shows rather than tells.  The first concept tries to communicate the idea of durability, effectiveness, and price by giving you sales statistics and slogans.  Fine--but the rest of your direct sales site should do the same, and to give this kind of information in your audio-visual solution isn't really playing to the strengths of the medium.  The second concept shows you the same ideas: the product is obviously durable if the same man can use it for his entire life, it's obviously effective if he never switches products, and it's obvious (although admittedly less so) that it's a good deal since it doesn't seem to require a lot of maintenance or replacement.

Second: it provides an emotional experience.  In the first concept, the owner of the company is trying to convince you to buy a product.  In the second concept, we have images of contentment and family, as well as a meditative sense of reflection about the cycles of life.  It's much easier to emotionally relate to the second concept: we've all been young, we all will be old, and we can all see ourselves in the video.  We've also provided the product with some crucial branding indicators without having to waste any time doing so through words or slogans.

Third: it doesn't overstay it's welcome.  The first concept would need to be at least two minutes long in order to really touch on all of the advantages of the product.  The second concept, with some careful editing, could make its point in roughly twenty seconds.  When your customer goes to your page, they're probably going to look at your audio-visual components before they look at anything else.  (We'll talk about why this is true later.)  If you make them watch a two minute video, they're going to get bored and leave your page more often than not.  If you make them watch a twenty second video--and moreover, one that's engaging and emotionally charged--they're not only going to stay on your page and buy your product, but they'll be happy to do so. 

Video is a quick medium: it makes its point and then moves on.  Don't bore your viewer and lose your sale in the process.  Show them what your product does, get at their emotions, and then don't waste any of their time: take them immediately to your sales letter and your ordering page.

Professional lighting probably isn't in your budget, but it's not usually a good idea to rely on natural lighting alone.  Natural lighting on video tends to make an image look flatter than it would otherwise be, washes out colors, and just makes your image look drab and home-made.  It doesn't really separate your content out from anyone else's.

You can get a professional lighting effect without paying professional fees, though.  If you're shooting indoors, all you'll need is two light sources--three, if you happen to have a spare lamp lying around.

One light is your primary lighting source, responsible for creating strong areas of light and strong shadows.  Another light, placed directly opposite the first but further away, is responsible for filling in and softening some of the shadows created by the first light, but still preserving the greater contrast and definition.  The third light, if you've got one, is small and placed behind the image you're shooting in order to provide a little bit of separation from your background.

That's really all it takes: three light bulbs and some creative ideas for placement.  Jack Black (of all people) provides a good tutorial for creating this lighting setup at acceptable.tv (full URL: http://acceptable.tv/tutorial/18 )  The presentation is a little bit absurd and the tutorial is more geared for creative/dramatic work than for commercial purposes, but the information about how to design a lighting setup and place individual lights is simple, solid, and usable.

Notes On Chroma-Keying

Depending on what your basic concept is, you may need to plan your video recording sessions to take into account the process of chroma-keying.  Chroma-keying can be an incredibly powerful, cost-effective, and exciting tool to make your video projects more dynamic and visually interesting.  But it also gives you a host of new challenges to deal with in your shooting and can lead to some serious technical problems along the way if you're not careful.

Chroma-keying, often called "bluescreening" or "greenscreening", is the process of filming actors, set pieces, and other foreground elements in front of a large solid green or blue-colored screen.  The raw footage is then taken into editing software and the solid color is removed entirely, allowing the editor to place an entirely different image in the background.  Most TV weather reports use chroma-keying to superimpose the image of the weatherman on top of a map, for example.  Chroma-keying is also a commonly used technique in modern CGI-fueled motion pictures--the recent Star Wars prequels, for example, used green screens almost exclusively to create elaborate digital backdrops.

The word "professional" here does not have to mean "expensive."  There are plenty of online tutorials (like the one at http://www.stormforcepictures.com/howto-buildamobilegreenscreen.php, notable for its focus on sensible budgeting and easily-found materials) that teach you how to make your own chroma-key screen that'll give you professional performance on a modest budget.  If you want to do something interesting in the background of your video--placing a spokesman talking about GPS functions on top of stock footage of cars racing through deserts, for example--you'll want to invest some money and time into chroma-keying.

There are two critical points to remember when preparing to shoot chroma-keyed footage. 

One: make sure that you light the scene deliberately in order to limit the number of shadows and highlights that show up on your chroma-keyed backdrop.  Strong shadows or lights change the apparent color of the chroma-key backdrop in your raw footage, and you won't be able to remove the area of shadow from your footage without a lot of messy frame-by-frame hand editing.  If you light everything to eliminate shadows you can save yourself an infinity of headaches down the line.

Two: make sure that your editing software can deal with chroma-key footage adequately!  Badly-done chroma-keying leaves your image with large, weird areas of color in some frames, which looks much worse than no chroma-keying at all and will definitely break your emotional connection with your potential customers.  In the next chapter, we'll discuss some of the most common editing suites in detail, with some specific focus on this issue.

Once you have your big Audio Video concept, it's time to ask yourself this: what are the costs of audio-visual solutions for your sales website? 

Video Recording Equipment

How much you'll need to spend on video recording equipment depends on what you need to record.  If your page concept requires nothing more demanding than a few video testimonials from satisfied customers or a sales pitch from a company insider, you can probably get away with a high-end USB webcam and some careful attention paid to lighting and sound.  If you want to film some footage of your product being tested or used in the field, you'll want to invest some more money in a more elaborate and powerful camera, something that gives you more interesting lighting options, or that allows you to save video information in a variety of formats.

Audio Recording Equipment

Any good camera probably comes with a microphone.  Whether that microphone is something you want to use or not is another question.  Most on-board camera microphones don't provide you with ideal sound recording conditions and they make it more difficult for you to polish your final product.  The camera microphone is usually too close to the moving parts of the camera to get a clear, uninterrupted signal, which leads to distracting audio hum and an overall aura of amateurism.  So going for the cheap solution in terms of audio recording isn't a good idea.

On the other hand, there's no real need to go for the most expensive solution in terms of audio recording.  There are plenty of microphones out there designed for professional film work and for professional audio recording.  These microphones are designed to eliminate all background noise, to capture audio signals in full fidelity, and to generally provide the viewer with a beautiful and captivating audio experience.  But here's the difference: movies and musical recordings are themselves the products they're trying to sell. 

If you buy a CD by your favorite band and the recording sounds terrible, you're going to feel that you've gotten an inferior product.  If you watch a Flash presentation for a computer operating system with iffy audio recording, you can't really draw any conclusions about the product--what matters isn't audio clarity but how well the product works on your computer.

So the key is to get audio recording equipment that provides you with enough fidelity so that you can hear all of your dialogue or music clearly, but that doesn't break your bank by giving you lots of useless flourishes and "icing."  A good directional microphone can usually do the trick and won't cost you more than about twenty to forty dollars, depending on how complicated it is to connect your microphone to your computer, camera, or other recording device. 

With some careful attention paid to good sound recording practices (as we'll cover in a later chapter), you shouldn't need more than this unless your product really focuses on audio as a key component, or unless you're doing something very elaborate with your sales presentation (something which you can probably scale down without any problem.)

Generally speaking, it's a good idea to spend as much money as your budget allows when it comes to any recording equipment.  After all, it's not likely that your first audio-visual enhanced web page will be your last.  You'll have more ideas for products and you'll need to build more web pages to promote and sell them.

In order to really translate your concept/idea into a video presentation that you can work with, you'll need to make sure your camera is equipped with a few vital functions, and you'll need to make sure and avoid a few common errors for first-time camera buyers.

Above all: make sure that your camera has a jack for an external microphone.  We talked about the reasons for this in the last chapter--you need to avoid capturing humming feedback from the camera itself, you need to make sure you can record strong directional audio--but it's important enough to repeat here. 

Having an external mic jack frees you from dependence on whatever equipment you start with and lets you record audio in a variety of situations.  It also--and maybe more importantly--ensures that you don't have to record and synchronize your audio separately, in the editing room. 

Anyone with painful experience editing video and audio together will appreciate the ability to avoid this extra step.  You can make sure that your camera is picking up both video and audio in a single chunk of data, you can avoid extra time and technical problems later, and you can ensure that your audio is of the highest quality possible.  An external microphone jack: do not try to do without it!

A tripod seems as if it'd be equally as important, but in practice you can often get away without using one.  Any indoor shooting you do will probably give you some opportunity to place your camera in a secure location, even if sometime it takes a little bit of imagination to do so. 

Outdoor shooting will invariably be more complicated and it's worth investing in a tripod if your sales concept requires a lot of outdoor shooting or testimonials that you plan to film on site.  (Whatever you choose to do, make sure that you don't just fall back on holding the camcorder in your hands: it's shaky and irritating to watch and it just looks unprofessional.)

How your camcorder records film is another important issue.  The choice of which recording method you want to use is going to depend on what software you plan to use to edit your footage into something you can put on the web.  Ideally, you'll want to start with the highest resolution, frame rate, and picture quality that you possibly can--streaming or downloading video on the web always requires some loss of quality, and the more high-resolution your raw footage is, the better you'll do after compression.

There are plenty of different options for actually saving your video data.  But in reality, there are two workable options: mini-DV tapes, or an on-board hard drive and a direct USB connection.  (Don't even think about trying to use non-DV formats for filming audio-visual material: you'll have to invest in expensive "capture cards", you'll suffer a major loss of video quality, and you'll simply add endless amounts of hassle to your development cycle with no clear reward.)

Mini-DV tapes have the distinct drawback of being expensive, unless of course you keep erasing and reusing old tapes.  Doing that, though, eliminates one of the best advantages of the mini-DV tape format: archiving your footage. 

One man's trash is another man's treasure, and if you can't use that nice exterior footage you filmed for this project, you can certainly use it for a future audio-visual project without spending extra time on filming things twice.  You also have a permanent backup of any critical footage (an interview with a difficult-to-contact but well-known actor who uses your product, maybe), in case the worst happens, you lose your edited movie files, and you have to start over from scratch. 

Over time, you'll likely find that the added peace of mind and convenience of having your footage backed up far outweighs the hassle and cost of buying tapes.

A direct USB connection is the other viable option.  You lose the ability to store all of your footage, since you'd have to store it on a computer rather than on tapes, and your footage will quickly eat up too much of your hard drive space if you're filming at high quality.  But you do save on the cost of tapes, and you do have the ability to quickly grab the day's footage from your camera and shoot it directly into your editing software without any hassle. 

Mini-DV tapes sometimes require complicated interfaces in order to get your footage into your computer, and transferring your footage from peripheral to peripheral can lead in a worst-case scenario to losing significant amounts of quality.  If you don't want to mess around with this problem and you don't think you'll need to retain much of the footage you've been shooting for future projects, just make sure your camcorder has a USB connection (honestly, you'd have to work pretty hard to find a new camcorder that doesn't.)

The only other thing to remember when choosing a camcorder is, of course, to test it out before you buy it.  Make sure you like the control options--zooms, resolutions, effects.  Make sure you like how the camera captures and displays light: if everything looks overexposed and difficult to make out just in your test footage, you're not going to want to wrestle with the thing for your entire project.  And again: make sure that the camera's resolution and file format works with your editing software, and that it's reasonable as far as how much memory it takes up.  There's no point in getting perfect footage if doing so will inevitably crash your editing software.

Advanced editing effects--menus, bullet points, scene titles, and elaborate backgrounds--are an excellent way to spice up your presentation, to make it give off an air of professionalism, and to let it stand out from the rest of the direct sales sites out there.  Advanced effects are also cheap to produce (depending on the editing software you're using, of course) and don't take much of your time either.  They also don't take up much of your viewer's time, since an effect, once it's placed into a sequence of footage, can just stay on the screen, letting your viewer look at it at his or her own pace.  It's a nice way to get the best of both worlds: the time-independent advantages of text, plus the drama and impact of video.

Because of all of their advantages, there's a tendency on the part of first-time editors to use too many effects in a single presentation.  Avoid this temptation, for the reasons we addressed earlier in the chapter.  Too many effects start to get confusing for your viewer and make your presentation seem either crass or incomprehensible.

When should you use advanced effects?  One rule: never use advanced effects for their own sake.

What does this mean in practice?  Say your product is a new piece of graphics software with an innovative GUI.  Your presentation shows a screen shot of the GUI in use.  It's easy to make overlay menus and effects, so you fill up the entire screen with them, labeling every interesting new button and feature all at once.  Then you let this complicated overlay play in the background while your presenter is talking about all of the great features in this new program.

The problem here has to do with the advantages of advanced effects that we just talked about.  Advanced effects, especially overlay graphics, give your viewer something information-dense to look at and to read while your presenter is talking.  That's all well and good. 

But if your viewer is spending too much time reading and deciphering your overlay graphics--figuring out exactly what each label on each button in our GUI says, in the example--then that viewer isn't paying attention to what your audio track is saying.  You spent a lot of time on that audio track; it's key to your design concept, and you want them to pay attention to it.  So don't give your viewer other things to pay attention to!

Here's a good way to use overlay graphics.  Take the same GUI example.  Your presenter is talking about the advanced features it gives you.  As he talks about each feature, add the overlay graphic for that feature and that feature alone to the footage. 

The viewer's attention will go to the feature; he'll read the information in the graphic, and his mind will be back on what the presenter is saying before you know it.  It's elegant and it actually heightens what the presenter is saying, visually emphasizing his points.  And once the information is on the screen anyway, you can leave it there for the rest of the speech or take it off, depending on what your concept is.

Overlay special effects can be fun, but should also be used carefully.  Say your presenter is talking about a new hypnotherapy CD that you're trying to sell.  The presenter throws up his hands when talking about the "power of hypnosis", and you use your editing software to add a quick animated lightning flash.  It's definitely funny, cheesy (in an endearing way), and dramatic, but it can also get distracting if used too much.  If you plan to do this kind of thing, try to avoid doing it more than once or twice per video.

Chroma-key effects are a different story, since in order to include them you have to be planning to film chroma-key footage from the concept stage onward.  In other words, it doesn't make sense to say "use chroma-key effects sparingly" if all of your footage is filmed against a green screen. 

What you can do, however, is make sure that your chroma-key effects look as seamless as possible.  When possible, try to use existing photographic backgrounds, large, crisp images of your product, or anything that doesn't look blurry, stretched or visually distracting.  And above all, make sure that you can make out your presenter or your product against a chroma-key background.  There's little worse than having your presenter's red shirt disappear against a sunset background, or similar color mishaps.
