Home Business Time Management Tips

Learning to master time management can make or break your home business. In the early days of your home business, you will still have a lot to learn and as you fill orders, work with customers and businesses; the hours can fly by very quickly. You will discover that there are not enough hours in a day to complete all of your daily tasks.

Efficiently managing your time will help you to create order out of chaos. If you wake up and simply start moving things around without some sort of plan in place, you can easily forget important jobs that need to be completed forget orders, neglect to call back clients and lose customer confidence in your fledgling company.

Plan Ahead

Have a plan in place such as a daily schedule. Follow up that schedule with a weekly schedule that fully covers all of your daily tasks. With this plan in place, you can quickly take stock of your time to figure out what needs to be done. This will help you to achieve your goals by completing important tasks first, and getting through simple tasks with time to spare. Get into the habit of checking, editing and updating this schedule as last minute plans may arise.

This plan will allow you to get your work done without creating a backlog because you accepted too much work in a short amount of time. When new requests come in, you can look at these schedules to see if you have the time to spare or if you should turn down the job due to lack of time. It can be hard to turn away new business or repeat offers but if you accept more work than you can complete in a comfortable amount of time, you will disappoint clients who will go elsewhere when they have new jobs.

Start Business Early

Some people will create a home business to sleep late and work whenever they want to. However, this is not likely to happen. If you sleep all day, no one is running your business and it will not be successful. If you have family as well, getting up early will allow you to take care of them and send off in the morning. You can then shower, eat breakfast and head off to your home office awake, refreshed and ready to work.

Separate Family and Business Life

Spending more time with your family may be one reason that you decided to open your own business, but you will have to keep the two separate to appear more professional and to keep everything organized. If you have young children, keep them away from your home office if possible. If you allow them to play in this room while you are working, they may feel that they can enter it when you are away. This can lead to ruined or lost paper work, schedules and important tasks that you need for your business.

Separating business and family is also a good way to help you to relax and get away from work. When you have completed your tasks for the day, you can simply close the door and go spend time with your family. This is hard to do if your computer and business is in an area that is accessible to the entire household. You want a personal space that you can shut away from the outside world when you are working and away from your personal life when you want to get away from the home office.

Set Priorities

If you do not have your priorities in order, you can end up doing a lot of work and have nothing to show for it at the end of the day. Completing a large amount of work one day, won’t help you if you have forgotten to complete an important and time sensitive job because you did not schedule your time correctly.

Today the Internet is much more than a simple document storage/retrieval system. It is a great vehicle for anyone who wants to setup an online business with little or no money and a want-it-now attitude.

I have a programming background but it was not my technical know-how that allowed me succeed in this area but my trials and errors as an online business owner.

I have tried many opportunities and techniques but it was through my failures I've learnt and consolidated a simple technique to succeed as an online business owner.

I can assure you that, although you will need to acquire some basic technical skills, your success will depend not on your programming or typing skills but more on what you have between your ears.

Below is my list of what you'll need and have to do, to succeed as an online business owner.

1. Have a dream and persistence. If you haven't got a dream and the persistence to follow it through then you will fail, guarantied.

2. Have a mentor. Find someone who has gained the experience in this field. Beg, crawl, wash their car, do whatever takes to become their student. Listen to their advice and learn from their failures and successes. You'll save yourself a lot of time, effort and money not to mention heartache and disappointment.

3. Find a hobby, a 'pet' project, something you are interested in and would do without payment or rewards. If it gets you excited, keeps you awake at nights thinking about it, it will provide you with opportunities to make money from it too. For example, once you have a project/activity that you live for, be it surfing, stamp collection, video games, mobile phones, you could start a local club. Once the club is established you can start a club website. Once the website is up and running you can introduce products to promote the club and your project/activity. You get the picture? You probably have seen the film 'Pay it forward'. Well, you can use the same principle in establishing an online business. Give something valuable first and then you'll get your opportunities to reap your rewards.

4. Promote and automate your project website. Once you completed step 3 above and your site is up and running you want to be able to promote your club site to 'outsiders'. You don't have to get technical and bogged down in programming or writing strings of HTML code. There are brilliant software out there to do a lot of 'skilled' tasks with the push of a button (both free and commercial products). Learn to use them well! Promoting your website should be your priority from now on. Get as many people to come to the site as you can and automate this activity. Start a newsletter to keep in touch with your members and provide them with free advice, tips and news on the subject of your project/activity. And again, automate this too. Get software to automatically distribute your newsletters and automatically sort any emails you get in reply to your posts. Set up autoresponders signup new members and to respond to email queries; automate, automate, automate...

5. Once you have enough members and you have an established, loyal group of followers, you can introduce your promotional products and other services that you now want to sell and make money from as a business. You'll have to be gentle and do this bit by bit. You may also find it useful to have another, separate, commercial site for this purpose and simply direct your members there from your 'signature files' or 'letterheads' you send out as part of your club newsletter. By now you should have enough experience in setting up and running a website from step 3 above. If you did have a separate commercial site you run a smaller risk of offending 'purist' club members.

6. Review the operation of your site, experiment and test the effect of site layout, content, headlines etc. Review and look for opportunities to further automate anything that you can to make your site 'self-sustaining'. If you do this you should be able to get yourself more free time to actually enjoy your hobby/project and to go out and look for more new material (advice, tips and news) that you can send out to you members. Once you have a website running and are making money out of it, it is very easy to forget that without new content and looking after your members your business will not survive. So make sure that the time you have freed up by automating your processes, you put back into searching for and providing fresh content and keep on provide a service to your members and keep in mind that they are members because they share your enthusiasm for the hobby and not for your business. Find a gentle balance between that hobby and your commercial interests.

3. Pay per click (PPC):
There are several search engines offering pay per click program. Advertiser choose the keyword and the bid. If the visitor search for this keyword, advertisements targeted for this keyword are displayed. If more advertisers select the same keyword the advertisements are sorted by the bid (except google AdWords, there the advertisement position depends on the bid and click rate). The big advantage of pay per click system is the fact that you can start your campaign during a few minutes.

4. Banner exchanges:
You include a HTML code to your web site and each time somebody visits the site where the HTML code is placed a banner will be displayed and you get some credits (usually 1/2 - 1 credit depending on the exchange ratio). For each credit you "earn" your banner will be displayed on another banner exchange members page. This type of promotion is good for branding but it will increase your traffic just about 0,1 - 1 % only (depending on click rate of your banner) so always combine this method with another strategies.

5. Promotional coupon codes:
Everybody is happy for a free gift or some discount and a lot of online marketers take advantage of this fact. So why don't make your customers happy too? There are many promotional coupon code directories on Internet. Put your coupon code to most of these web sites. Try combination of promotional coupon codes strategy and affiliate marketing. Give away to your publishers promo codes or special affiliate link. If the visitor click this link he gets some discount, free gift, free shipping or another benefits.

With the advent of Google losing a court case (and a shed load of money) and the continued problem of click fraud the question is now on the tip of everyone’s tongue – “Is Google Adsense still the cash cow that it was?”.

In this article I’ll take a look at ways in which the average webmaster may still develop a successful Adsense business and how to use the up and coming Google witch hunt to your advantage.

There are currently two main problems that are facing Google, both of which are serious and could lead to the demise of both Adsense and Adwords.

The first and most serious problem is that of click fraud. For those of you who do not know click fraud is the act of clicking on your own (or a friends) ads in an attempt to generate artificial earnings.

This is such a problem for Google as it ensures that the value that Adwords purchasers gets is significantly less then they would want, thus ensuring that sooner or later they will just get up and walk away (with what remains of their advertising budget firmly clamped in their hand).

To remedy this problem Google have tried putting several rules in place such as not allowing the webmaster to show Adsense ads in auto surf sites (to name but one restriction).

The second problem that Google faces relates to content, notably the amount of original content which is out there.

The problem in this case is that many people have purchased article scraper software (software that you point at someone elses website and just shout ‘Fetch!’ – it then returns a document collection which is a complete rip off of the site).

This was already a problem before the advent of Adsense sites and with the continual chain of people chasing high value keywords it has become worse; It is now possible to search for a given phrase on Google and return nothing but duplicate content for the first few pages of search engine results.

In order to address this problem Google has been modifying it’s algorithm to effectively punish people with duplicate content, the extent to which an individual site is ‘penalized’ is currently a matter for debate.

So, given Google is about to launch a witch hunt looking for sites with nothing but duplicate content and for people performing click fraud what can you do?

After all there are so many people out there using site generation tools that Google can trace and/or document obfustication technology (you’ve seen the ads – “We can make your one original article into 300 and Google will never know!” – yep, and anyone who visits your site will just find drivel with spelling errors or contextual mistakes).

Step 1.
If you must use site generation software make sure you find one that leaves no trace behind itself, ask yourself – ‘If I was looking at the source code from the generated page how would I know that it’s machine generated?’

Step 2.
Don’t use site scraping tools, they're immoral and a waste of your time

Step 3.
Do include RSS feeds into your pages, they add fresh content with no effort on your part (at least one of the site generation tools now supports this kind of functionality)

Step 4.
Don’t click on your own adverts, Google will can you in the blink of an eye

Step 5.
Do get incoming links from established sites (in the same area as your niche content)

Summary.
If you are at all serious about creating an Adsense income you need more than one site and so it is inevitable that you will use site generation tools (because there aren’t enough hours in the day for you to create the amount of pages by hand), by all means use these tools but use them ethically.

When using site generation tools ensure that they allow you to add multiple blocks of Adsense /Clickbank /Ebay code to each page (it saves you a lot of time) and that it performs search engine optimization for you (both on page and off page).

You should also take the time to write some of your own original content – like this or perhaps pay a ghost writer to create a batch of articles for you (don’t forget to ad your bio box at the bottom of everything you write).

To answer the initial question, yes, it is still possible to make LOTS of money from Google – you just need to be careful.

This is rather easy to achieve on the Internet. In fact many people managed to profit from this system in the 1990's when Google introduced AdSense and AdWords.  Many people (Mainly stock traders at first), immediately saw the potential for arbitrage in Google's systems and started driving traffic through Adwords ads to high paying Adsense ads on their sites from that very same traffic they were buying through Adwords.  HOWEVER . . . .

 

Using this system, many people became rich overnight. But after maybe 6 months, Google figured out about what these "Ad Traders", were doing and decided to ban this technique from being used through their advertising systems. Now all systems that are similar to Google's Ad systems got savvy to the arbitrage techniques.

 

Therefore it is very difficult nowadays to get any low cost traffic to high paying niche ad sites either from search engines, AdWords or any other system, because the search engine’s and Online Ad Firm’s systems are now programmed to ferret out Ad Arbitrage!  But I stumbled upon an even more efficient way to use the Advertising Arbitrage technique, which is even easier and less complicated.

 

Bidvertiser.com is the website I will be using here in my examples. I chose bidvertiser.com because it was so easy to register with them, and they are not so fussy about paying directly to your PayPal account on time every month.  I suggest using webwire.com for press releases to get traffic to your site, though you may alternatively use PRweb.com - As well you can use Bidvertiser.com and AdSense on your website instead of just Bidvertiser.com, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are driving traffic to your site with Adwords.

 

First, we want to break down the system that has proven to work for many other people into its basic components:

 

1.     Attracting traffic

2.     Monetizing your websites

 

It's as simple as that. You are going to pay someone to help you attract traffic to your niche website, and then you are going to monetize your web pages so that the traffic generates more income than it cost to generate.

Recession?  Seriously? 

Okay, fine.  The market is having some troubles.  What do you do?  Do you cower in fear, doubt, and uncertainly like the masses or do you…please forgive me for the cliché; do you make lemonade from lemons?

It’s true.  Right now we’re living in some pretty uncertain times financially speaking.  However, there’s always opportunity.  The online world is still thriving.  In fact, it’s growing.  The self help and home based business is booming!  The investment market is actually thriving – people are anxious to learn how to invest their money, protect their money, and still live the same quality of life they’re used to. 

Warren Buffet just invested 5 billion into Goldman Sachs.  Of course he had 5 billion to invest in the first place but this is a guy who isn’t casual with his money.  And he just invested 5 billion in what many would consider the most unstable sector in the world. 

Why?

He sees an opportunity.

It’s what successful entrepreneurs do.

Successful entrepreneurs are typically risk takers.  Not blind risk takers who jump into a pool of hungry sharks without looking first. 

Instead, they spend a bit of time evaluating the risk and then deciding whether it’s worth jumping in.  That doesn’t mean that every single light is green and it’s 100% okay to make the jump, or investment.  But it means they know what they’re getting into.  They understand the risks.

Along with understanding the risks, successful entrepreneurs understand, and look for, opportunity.

Think about Amazon, Paypal, and even the folks over at MySpace.  They saw a potential opportunity and took some very big risks – boy did they pay off. 

Despite what the mainstream media will have you believe – those opportunities are still available.  The only difference between five years ago and today is the collective consciousness – if the media is telling everyone that the economy is good and invest, invest, invest – the collective buys into it and boom – everyone and their brother are taking huge risks with the comfort that the financial guru they saw on CNN the other night said it was a good thing to do – the economy is great.

Now the same financial guru is telling everyone to buckle down.  Save money, don’t spend.  Hold tight to your investments.  Don’t take any risks. 

And the collective conscious believes it.  They hold tight to their money.

The result…missed opportunity.

Assuming you do your homework, analyze the market, and understand the risks – the risks are the same as it was 5 years ago.  The opportunities are the same.

What is required to recognize and take advantage of these opportunities?

A good attitude is a must.

A good attitude means you’ve established the desire to be wealthy.  Now that may sound very simplistic.  Everyone wants to be wealthy, right?  No, not really.  Some people are quite content at their current income level what ever it may be. 

And many of those who do desire great riches let other desires, beliefs and myths about money get in the way.  Napoleon Hill outlined six steps to achieving Desire as it relates to attaining wealth.  They are:

#1  Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire.  (This is very much part of the visualization and goal setting process and is critical to success)  At first you may think, “Oh okay, I want a million dollars.”  Then you’ll think, “No, this is a visualization exercise, right?  How about six million dollars?”  Then the doubts will start to enter your mind and you may drop down to $100,000.  The goal here is to let go of those limiting beliefs.  If you want six million then fix that amount in your mind. 

Perhaps you need to do a little bit of thinking, meditating, or even planning on how much money you want.  That’s fine.  Take your time.  It’s important that you’re comfortable with the number you’re seeking.

#2  Determine exactly what you are willing to give in return for the money you desire.  It’s the old you don’t get something for nothing philosophy.  This is actually a great way to help let go of your limiting beliefs about money particularly if they relate to money being inherently bad.  What would you do if you achieved the monetary goals you’ve set forth?  Will you donate a specific amount to charity each year?  Will you volunteer your time?  Will you employ people and offer a great salary and benefits package?  What are you willing to put out there?

#3  Establish a specific date for receiving or earning the money goal you’ve established.  Tomorrow, right?  You’d like that six million dollars tomorrow, please.  Okay, now step back and consider what may be more reasonable.  Not too reasonable mind you, you probably don’t want to set your goal 20 years in the future however 12 months isn’t unreasonable is it?  Neither is six months, or even three. 

#4  Carry out a plan to begin – Mr. Hill recommends taking action whether you are ready or not.  You can’t spend your life planning, it’ll just pass you by.  So how are you going to make this money?  What’s going to happen or change in your life to make it happen?  Are you going to write the next Harry Potter?  Are you going to develop a software product or game that sells out all over the world?  What skills, talents, and knowledge do you have, or you have access to, to make it happen? 

#5 & #6  Create a written statement for the first four actions described above and then read it aloud twice a day. Once when you’ve just woken up and once before you go to bed.

This process as it was laid out by Napoleon Hill in 1937 and supported by wealth coaches, personal coaches, professional coaches and mentors all around the world, may seem a bit simplistic at first glance.  However, upon implementing it you will see it has a very powerful effect on not only your attitude but your motivation as well. 

Visualization is a technique that successful people in all walks of life utilize to improve and to achieve their desired results.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a stay at home parent who aspires to build a six figure business or an Olympic athlete – visualization and establishing a desire to achieve are a necessary first step to real success and wealth. 

An economic downturn matters.  Of course it does.  However, where there’s the desire to succeed, where there’s openness to success, wealth, and the power of opportunity, there’s a real chance to profit – desire is the first step.

First of all, to increase readership you would want to increase the number of pages each reader is seeing. You don’t want to be judged only on your last post, but rather on the whole of your work. To that end, try highlighting related posts within your blog. At the end of an article, highlight posts that may be of interest to those who like the current post. Most blog platforms are fitted with plug-ins that will help you with this, but if they are not, then go ahead and at least list the links to other pages manually. Another similar idea is to highlight the related posts within the content of your post. If you are talking about a subject you have discussed before, link off of one of the keywords into the past post that is related. This will also help a past post to maintain its freshness.

A second tip for increasing your blog readership is to think about doing a series. A series is a great way to keep a reader coming back again and again. In addition, if you are linking back, you can get readers looking at multiple posts even after you are done with the series. Be careful when doing a series, because you do not want to frustrate readers. However, if you have a topic you genuinely think you should handle over a period of time, then a series can really help your overall readership. If you are curious as to whether or not a series is working for your blog, then check posts. See if readers are posting through the series to see if they are following you. If they are, then your series is a success and you are only helping your blog readership.

Another way to increase readership is a little more “controversial” if you will. You can try putting excerpts on the front page of your blog from certain posts. Many people claim it is just a way to get more hits on your site. The truth is that extra hits are a little side benefit of it, but the real value is that it can make your site more engaging. By adding excerpts to the front page you can manage the front and keep it fresh while also teasing those who get that far into reading more than just your most recent blog post. This will encourage a prospective reader to explore your blog site a little more than they may have normally. Again, you want to be judged by the whole of your work, or at least by a larger piece of your work than just one post and this will do that. If your writing is up to par, then, you will see a rise in your readership.

Finally, if you really want to build and increase readership, you have to have good quality content. It should be useful, original, and interesting to your target audience as well as keeping them wanting more of the same. The more you raise the quality of your blog’s content, the more you will see your membership, readership, and page hits go up without even having to use any other “tricks.” People know what they like and they like quality for the most part. Giving the readers what they are after is probably the best way possible to increase your blog readership.

Having a blog can not only be fun, but if you are doing it right it can also be profitable. Either way, though, you want to maintain and increase a following, or readership. There are as many tips out there to increase blog readership as there are blogs, but to really get things going, consider using these four tips. Follow them and you will see your readership grow.

This information should include ways that the new home business will be successful in competing – how it is unique and how it is an improvement over what else is out there in the same industry.

A successful home business is one that is set up as the right legal entity. One of the first things new home based entrepreneurs should do is learn the legal consequences and liabilities of the various business types, as well as the tax consequences of each. A home business might be more successful as a partnership than sole proprietorship, for example, if additional cash flow is needed, or the entrepreneur is deficient in a crucial home business skill such as advertising, marketing or accounting, for example. An accountant can advise on the various options such as limited liability corporations, S corporations, standard corporations, limited partnerships and so forth.

Unless a successful home business is going to include walk in customers homeowner’s or renters insurance should provide adequate financial protection against theft or natural disaster. Of course, as equipment and furnishings are added, the insurance would need to increase. If clients were to come to the home office location, liability insurance would protect the firm from the financial devastating situation of customer injury.

 The lifeblood of any Internet marketer is their list. If you have an opt in email list then you are sitting on piles of cash, if you properly use your list then your earning potential is very high.

As many people ask "How do I build a list?" the following points describes some of the best ways for building your email list.

1) Newsletter / E-zine

We are in the Information Age and so people are desperate for information. Everyone is so busy with their lives they don’t have time to find the information for themselves. Publish a newsletter in your niche that is full of valuable content and you will get people flocking to you to sign up.

2) E-Courses

People are hungry for information, so a free e-course will persuade people to part with their email address. Create at least a seven part course that is delivered every few days into their inbox. Of course, the e-course also subtly sells your product!

3) Articles

Write articles and distribute them to article directories. Include your newsletter sign up in the resource box and if you have provided good quality content, you will get the visitors who will sign up to learn more.

4) Free Books

A free e-book is an excellent way to build your list. It doesn’t have to be an epic tome, just valuable information that people will exchange their email address for. You can write one yourself or get one ghostwritten for you. 6) Squeeze Page

A squeeze page is a pre-sales letter page where you capture a person’s email address before they move on to view your sales letter. This is reportedly very effective and you can also personalise the sales letter with their name or other details from the squeeze page.

7) Pop Up

Pop up windows, particularly unique and different windows, can be very effective at persuading people to sign up for your newsletter. These can either pop up as the visitor enters your site, or when they leave, reminding them to sign up for more information.

8) Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is where you give away something of value that people want to pass to all their friends. It may be a video, a book, a game or anything similar. However, whatever it is, it has your web address in it so people can come and sign up to your newsletter and get more info.

9) Free Giveaways

A very popular new method of list building are the big Internet giveaways where lots of people submit products that are available for free in exchange for a newsletter sign up. These are excellent ways to rapidly build your list – though be aware that freebie seekers may not make for the most responsive of lists.

10) Sign up bonuses

If you have a website about a topic you enjoy, you can make money from discussion forums. Talk, post links to your site, get traffic. Traffic means money, right? If not, try different affiliate programs or Google Adwords. The worst sites should get a couple cents per visitor. Now here's how to talk and make money.

Search "forum" plus the topic of your site on Google or Alta Vista. For my first site, I searched "backpacking + forum" and in the pages of results I found several good forums. I also searched related topics like "hiking" too. You can also check about.com, and other sites that have forums on many topics.

Registration is usually giving your email address and choosing a password. Some forums allow guests to post without registering. Once registered, browse the forum topics, and post a response to anything, just to "learn the ropes".

Income From Discussion Forums

The point of posting in forums is to get readers to come to your web site. Sure it's fun to give advice and discuss things of interest to you, but that's secondary. With that in mind, do the following:

1. Always link to your site. If they don't allow any links, find another forum.

2. Don't "spam." Sales pitches will be removed. Offer honest advice, or express an opinion, then sign off with your name and the link to your site.

3. Ask for help from others. This is an effective and acceptable way to "advertise." Enter a topic like "Can I get some advice?" and post something like, "I just started a meditation site. If some of you would visit and tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it." Have a link to the site. People love to help, and to give  opinions, and they'll click on those ads while they're at your site.

4. Look at total "views." Many forums show the total times each "thread" has been viewed. When you see some with many more than others, get in on those, or start a new thread on the same topic. Go where the traffic is, and get some of it.

I didn't like the idea of forums until I made a few posts, and saw my traffic and revenue climb for days afterwards. That convinced me. Just be polite, offer some value to others, and always have a link to your site. Many other secrets of using forums are covered in my newsletter, but this should be get you started. Below are some important things to consider when planning on a pay per click campaign:

1. Know your product.

Take an inventory of the product and/or services that you have to offer (before anything else).

2. Stay within the budget.

Determine your daily or monthly budget; and stay with it. This means keeping your budget in mind, avoiding bidding wars if possible.

3. Bid just right.

Know how to bid right - a bid that is too high can exhaust all of your money, while a bid that is too low can make you lose that spot.

4. Watch the bottom line.

Measure your profit margin against your spending or expenses. Know when to stop and terminate your PPC program - if you spend more on advertising but have little or no sales at all.

5. Find the right keywords.

The lifeblood of any Internet marketer is their list. If you have an opt in email list then you are sitting on piles of cash, if you properly use your list then your earning potential is very high.

As many people ask "How do I build a list?" the following points describes some of the best ways for building your email list.

1) Newsletter / E-zine

We are in the Information Age and so people are desperate for information. Everyone is so busy with their lives they don’t have time to find the information for themselves. Publish a newsletter in your niche that is full of valuable content and you will get people flocking to you to sign up.

2) E-Courses

People are hungry for information, so a free e-course will persuade people to part with their email address. Create at least a seven part course that is delivered every few days into their inbox. Of course, the e-course also subtly sells your product!

For example, if your publish a newsletter to your customers or potential clients, aim for similar quality in each issue. Also, be consistent in your style of writing. Publish on a regular basis – irregular publication schedules cause confusion in the minds of your readers.

Consistency applies to every aspect of your business. Don’t change your guarantee terms every couple of weeks. Ensure that all your products or services consistently meet the quality and value standards that your are promoting.

Credibility is something that is earned. Therefore, you need to give of yourself to get trust back in return. There are many ways to do this. This process enables the potential customer to check that your product will do the job you say that it will.

Also, never make up testimonials to boost your credibility as more often than not you will be caught out and be discredited.

Don’t just state what your qualifications are on your web site or in your promotional material. Instead, state how your qualifications can benefit your potential customers. For example, state how your expertise will provide the solution your prospect needs in a way he or she will understand.

Following sound business practices will help your credibility also. This includes ensure that your business address and phone numbers are clearly shown on your web site. Also, ensure that you are contactable via phone and email and respond promptly to each contact. Have you had phone messages or email that were never responded to? How did that influence your perception of the business?

Prompt delivery of what has been ordered also helps build the right impression of your business. So too does quickly responding to claims on your guarantee. Efficient business procedures that are focused on providing customer satisfaction will always help your business image and credibility.

Strong credibility takes a long time and much effort to build. It can be destroyed quickly and sometimes can never be regained. Have you noticed that once a person or a business gains a bad reputation it can be extremely hard to change? For your business to achieve it’s full potential, it is important that you set standards and live by them so that you are constantly building your credibility.

Remember that each thing you do in your business will affect the image of your business. When someone starts an online business, and many do, they tend to think that they know what they are doing. In other words, they don't have a clue. Everyone keep telling them that they need a nice looking website, throw some affiliate programs on it, advertise at free classifieds pages, and watch the money roll in. Easy money, right? That's what they think.

"I don't need anyone to show me how to do this. It shouldn't be hard at all. Actually, it should be a walk in the park." Many people probably think like that. So they advertise here and there. Free classifieds. Free advertising. Maybe some forum posting every day. Free traffic, right?

A few days go by. Then a few weeks go by and they only made about $30 in sales in one month. Many continue to do this and think that if they keep doing the same thing, maybe a miracle will happen.

Not so......

It so very true that the online work at home arena is highly competitive. If you are doing the same thing and keep getting the same results over and over again, not only are you killing your potential for online success, but you are allowing other competitors to pass you by. The only thing that you need to do is to stop and find someone who is already succeeding with their online business. Become like an investigator. Investigate what they do EXACTLY on a daily basis that created that wealth for them.

Here are a few good pointers on what you can do to succeed online:

1) Start Getting Educated......

Again, find someone who is very successful online and see what they are doing on a daily basis that creates their success. Do some detailed research online as to what methods and techniques are working for them and others. You can not succeed if you keep associating yourself with people who aren't successful online. So you need to take yourself by the hands and start to associate with successful online friends.

2) You need an Auto-responder.....

Before I go into explaining this subject, it is important that you know that you will want to work with an opt in email subscribers who will come to your site and give you their personal permission to send them periodic emails. What you will not want to do is to buy email subscribers. If you do buy them and send them your emails, then this can kill you and your online reputation.

Having and opt-in email list will allow you to free up lots of your time because your prospects will be receiving messages from you periodically and automatically. The nice thing about email marketing is that instead of you having to call them each time you want to promote something, which will take you forever, your auto-responder system will be working for you while you go out and have fun.
 
Imagine having an opt in list of 10,000 subscribers. If you were to call each one of them to promote one of your programs, think how long it will take you to reach all of them. It would be impossible for you. With email, you can contact them all in a matter of a few seconds or minutes. You write one email and hit the "submit" button, and you are all done.
 
"If I don't get an auto-responder and email subscribers, will this cut my chances of succeeding online?"
 
I am not saying that it will, but if you do get one, your income will just keep growing all the time as your subscribers do.
3) Find a mentor

After you find someone who is very successful online, email them and tell them that you will want to work with them one on one if it is possible. Don't try going into their training thinking that you know it all. Listen and follow each guideline that they are recommending to you.

This person will be your mentor. Your coach and most of all, your friend.

By stepping out and trying a proven way to make money online, you will begin to see that you too can make a nice income online. And the best advice that I can also give you is to never ever give up. A lot of people are making nice incomes online and so can you. Believe in yourself and you will succeed.

As your alarm clock explodes into life each morning, and you reach out to pound it back into submission for another ten minutes, does the thought ever cross your mind that there could be a way to end this same tired, old routine?

Each day, as you make your way to and from your workplace, amidst the fumes, frustration, and financial drain that is the lot of a commuter, do you ever dream of being able to step out of your bedroom and straight into your workplace?

If you’re a Star Trek fan, you may be thinking, “Yes! Beam me up Scottie”--but if that was your first thought, then I’m afraid you may have to wait a little while longer. Transporter technology hasn’t quite been perfected yet. However, in spite of that slight delay in scientific progress, there is still a way to have the commute-free lifestyle you’ve been longing for. In fact, there are many people who have already turned that dream into a reality by successfully building their own home-based online businesses.

For the online business owner, there are no traffic jams, no co-workers breathing down their neck, and best of all, no BOSS! What more could anyone ask?

It sounds wonderful, and it certainly can be. However, achieving the type of success that will free you from the 9 to 5 rat race, does not just happen by itself.

The unfortunate fact is that most people will never reach this level of business success--not because they don’t have what it takes, but rather because they aren’t willing, or prepared, to take the time and effort needed to establish a proper business structure.

Now, right from the start, I’ll quite honestly say that this guide does not come with any absolute promises or guarantees. When it comes to business, there is no such thing as a “sure thing.” However, it does contain solid, time-tested procedures and advice that are essential for anyone who wants to succeed in any form of business. The new business owner ignores these things at their own risk--and, sadly, many do.

One of the main problems, when starting a business, is that many people begin with unrealistic expectations and the wrong information. If you do an internet search about starting a home-based business, you will be flooded with sites that promise to reveal the secrets of success that will help you to get rich quick. With titles such as, “How I Made $100,000 in 3 Days,” they tempt the budding entrepreneur with offers that seem too good to be true--and they usually are. Although it may be possible for someone to make a lot of money in a relatively short space of time, the reality is that for the vast majority, it is completely unlikely. Creating any form of successful business takes time, preparation, commitment and hard work.

Although many people want to start their own online businesses, very few actually know how to go about doing it ... but that doesn’t stop them. Armed with little more than a desire to make money, they rush in and begin something that they are completely unprepared and unsuited for.

A quick search on any topic will provide a plethora of sites providing relevant products or services for sale. If you take the time to visit these websites, you’ll quickly notice that most are quite unprofessional in appearance, and have little, if any, chance of success. Why? Quite simply because the new business owner has started things off on the wrong foot.

There really aren’t any special secrets to starting an online business, but there are some basic steps that will help you build your way to an online success.

Step 1: DECIDE WHAT YOUR BUSINESS IS GOING TO BE

At first glance, this initial stage of starting a business appears incredibly simple, if not completely obvious. Yet you may be surprised to discover how many people are involved in a business for which they have no experience or training. In fact, many have not even taken the time to research the field at all.

It makes good sense to choose a line of business for which you have some affinity. For example, if you have experience in designing and creating handcrafted items, a potential business opportunity would be that of an online store devoted to selling your crafts, and those of other artisans. Because you have a background in this particular field, you would have an immediate rapport with your target audience, and be able to understand what is important to them regarding your type of product. You would also be able to provide accurate and interesting articles that are relevant to your field of expertise. As a marketing tool, many a business has been enhanced by the introduction of an informative newsletter.

So, experience in your chosen field is definitely a big advantage. But there is one other thing that is vital--and that’s passion. There is no question that a person who is passionate about their business will have a far greater chance of seeing it become a success, than would someone who is ambivalent about their product or service. Believe me, I speak from experience.

Many years ago, my wife started cleaning homes as a way of earning another income, and she did very well.

A few years later, seeing the opportunity to make money, I decided to get involved in the cleaning business too, and I also did quite well. However, even though I was very happy to have my own business, I never truly enjoyed what I was doing. In fact, I have to admit that I dreaded the work. As a result of my lackluster attitude, I never took that business to the level that it could have reached if I had been at all passionate about it.

There is a lot of truth in the saying that “If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.” So before rushing headlong into the first business opportunity that comes your way, make sure that you take the time to really consider what is the right business for you, based on your interests, experience, talents and passions. If making money is the only positive factor, then think again. Taking the time to get this first step right, will ensure that you have a rock-solid foundation upon which to build the online success of your dreams.

It’s great to learn a new skill, and you can learn for free online – just invest a little time. Remember once you know how… you own that knowledge forever and you will never depend on someone else to build your site. Pay attention to how they send emails and how they sell products. Although this doesn't really give an accurate picture of what's going on behind the scenes with this persons business, some aspects do seep through the emails and you will be surprised at what you learn.

If you have the budget, I recommend buying some of their products if possible or joining their network marketing company if that's what you're learning about.  This allows you to learn how they treat new members, how they handle customer service and what kind of follow-up techniques they use.

Successful people have many things in common. Learn to take advantage of this. Don't just track one person, buy one person's products, subscribe to one email list and learn from one person. Subscribe to 5 to 10 lists and buy from the ones you are really interested in learning more about.

Over time you will start to build a real picture of what it takes to be successful. You'll begin to understand what decisions they make, how they act, how they react, how they present their products and more. The more you know about multiple successful people, the brighter and more obvious pattern of success you'll begin to see and be able to follow, and you will also be more able to avoid the false indicators along the way.

Start now by looking for 5 to 10 successful people in your online business field of interest, subscribe to their lists and just watch. Soon you will understand why certain ads work, why they write in the style they do, what they do to get people to take action, who they work with, and who they avoid.

Hopefully by now I have dispelled any notions that you either don’t need to provide customer support or that you don’t need a support desk to properly and expeditiously handle your customer support.

 

However, the type of support desk and available features you may or may not need should directly affect your reasons for choosing one support desk system over another. Keep in mind there are hundreds of support desk systems and Customer Relations Systems (That incorporate a support desk), available online. The purpose of this section is to provide you with a list of the minimum number of features you may need as a small or home based business, both Free and Paid.

 

Let’s take a look at a couple of types of support desk systems some of your competitors are using.  The following examples are just that; examples. They are not recommendations. Most of the FREE support desk systems lack certain features you business may need or have far more features than your business will require.

 

Free Support Desk Software Example 1: ActivDesk by FocalMedia at www.FocalMedia.net is a nice piece of software that is fairly feature rich and can meet the needs of most Internet marketers selling digital download products.

 

So if you’re ready, let’s go to www.FocalMedia.net/activdesk.html where you can take a look at the features and demo sites.  Then we’ll meet back here and discuss some of the pros and cons of this robust little support system.

 

Okay then . . . so what did you think?  It’s actually a pretty nice little system.  It has all the features a small business or one person operation could need with a couple of exceptions. So let’s look at the pros and cons:

Active Desk Cons

You may have noticed in the “Support Staff / Administrator Features” list, this feature and description:

• Customizable Autoresponders - Categories may have configurable autoresponders that is sent to customers requesting support. (You may have different autoresponder emails sent depending on the category where the ticket has been opened.)

 

Now to the novice this feature description may be construed as meaning the system has a “Pre-defined Reply Database” feature which it does not.  In fact, though this “Customizable Autoresponders” feature can be somewhat useful, for it to serve the same purpose as a pre-defined reply database, you would need to set up enough categories to cover every possible inquiry about a specific product. With most digital download products that would be next to impossible.

 

Furthermore part of the purpose of a pre-defined email database is to allow the CSR (Customer Service Representative), to hand pick a pre-defined email that is pertinent to the subject of the inquiry that also contains an appropriate recommendation, (When possible), of an offer that compliments the product the inquiry is in regard to.

 

So, though this software is EXTREMELY easy to set up and use, this one missing feature may dissuade some from choosing ActivDesk.

 

However, I know support managers that set up their own pre-defined email databases for systems that actually do have such a pre-defined reply database feature because they don’t like something about the way their systems allows a CSR to use the pre-defined email database.  I have in fact faced that issue myself and found it’s not all that hard to build your own database using something like the FREE desktop software: “Clipboard Magic” you can pick up at www.cybermatrix.com.

 

One more shortcoming of ActiveDesk is that there is no WYSWYG Editor. While it’s not necessarily something you want to have available to your customers, (Some have a tendency to put text in all bold or large letters to get a point across), it is on the other hand something that is nice for a CSR to have to make something in a support ticket stand out lessoning the chance the customer will miss something. But ActivDesk does offer the use of BB Code (Bulletin board code) similar to the code used in forums.  While that is fine for predefined replies, coding sections of text in regular replies can be kind of a pain and of course time consuming.

ActivDesk Pros

Besides those two short comings, ActivDesk is an extremely user friendly system that is easy to understand, configure and customize to match your web site.

 

Also unlike many support desk systems that requires a user to login to access the Knowledge Base, ActivDesk does NOT. 

 

Therefore your Knowledge Base home page becomes a page that can be promoted as though it was a list of keyword heavy articles with excerpts.  Promoting this page through search engines and other methods can bring you targeted prospective customers to your Knowledge Base answers that are laced with links to your sales or affiliate pages.

 

The great thing about being able to promote your Knowledge Base is, prospects that end up on your Knowledge Base home page believe they are accessing customer support information and are far less likely to click away immediately thinking it’s just another sales pitch.

 

All in all ActivDesk is a robust and fairly feature rich support desk software that is very easy to install.  Most Cpanels with Fantastico or SimpleScript make it a 3 click install.  Even if you install it your self, it is very easy to do even for the uninitiated to script installations.  Their documentation is well written and easy to understand.  Their own software support desk is of course top notch with timely and succinct responses.

More Is Not Necessarily Better

Something you should bear in mind here is that the more user friendly and the less learning curve there is to setting up and using a support desk system the better - especially for the novice.

 

When you are you’re entire business, or it’s up to you or one other person in your business to set up and manage your system, as long as a system has all the basic features, there is less of a learning curve and therefore it requires less time to start using your system effectively.

 

Having a multitude of additional features you may not need initially may only lead to an inordinate amount of time setting up and then handling your customer inquiries. The more features, the more complicated, the steeper the learning curve, the higher likelihood for frustration in handling your customer inquiries. Frustration leads to attitude problems which can lead to poor customer service.

Free Support Desk Software Example 2:

Now let’s take a look at another FREE support desk: OsTicket’s is free support desk software you can find at: http://osticket.com

This support ticket software is at the other end of the free ware spectrum at this point in time.  Why? Well I don’t want to be too hard on these guys as they located in the gulf coast area that was devastated by hurricane Katrina in 2005.

 

With that said, when you visit their site you will not find a features list for their software.  They claim the rebirth of OsTicket in December of 2007 but the version available through Fantastico is the pre-katrina version. The 1.31 version in Fantastico as of this writing is at best a weak feature poor system that becomes a spam sponge. 

 

One of the primary issues with the older version is it is void of spam protection.  There is a new version available directly from their site but before I ventured into installing their software, I would do some serious reading in their forum to see what kind of issues their users are having with their software.

 

My point in bringing up this support ticket software is this; just because a software program is free, and it is available as an easy install from your Cpanel’s Fantastico, that does NOT mean it is something you should install thinking it will be trouble free.

 

However, if you are just now considering starting your business, when you get to the point you can justify the need for a support desk, considering OsTicket’s promise to bring their product up to par, it may warrant at least taking a look at when you are ready.

 

Free or paid, you should not make a decision to install a support desk software without doing some serious research.  You want to not only determine if the software meets the needs of your business currently, but will be able to expand with you as your business grows.  Obviously to do serious research you will want to go through their support forum (If they have one), and look for online reviews of their product.

Free Support Desk Software Example 3 – Hosted

There is a support desk system that is available that is full featured and allows up to 5 users including the administrator.  If you were to use all the features it has available it is a full blown CRM.

 

Now as for what I wrote earlier regarding, “The more Features, the steeper the learning curve”, that still holds true.  However this company has open phone training with excellent system trainers every Monday @ 9:am Pacific.  As well their documentation is excellent as are their tutorials.

 

If your business needs currently require more than one CSR or staff user to handle your support needs or even if you see that as a real possibility in the short term, Extra View at www.ExtraView.com is well worth checking out.

Not All Free “Support Desk” Systems Really Free

You need to take care when searching for “FREE” support or help desk software.  For example, some Trouble Ticket Software is billed as “Free” but as you read down through the available features, you see there are a number of features that you have to purchase as an add on module to use that feature. 

 

For example, with “Trouble Ticket Express” is billed as Free Trouble Ticket Software” but when you read the features list (Found at:

www.troubleticketexpress.com, you will see things like this:

 

Optional MySQL database. (requires purchase of add-on module). Allows using MySQL database to store trouble tickets.

Whereas with software like ActivDesk, The MySQL database feature is functional without an additional purchase.  In fact when you install ActivDesk, it’s not an add in module, it is already MySQL functional.

 

You will also find plenty of supposedly free support desk software online that is only free to download a “Trial”, or will only support one CSR for free.  Of course that’s not bad if you only have one CSR.  But you want your support software to accommodate your company’s additional needs as you grow your business. If you have or foresee having more than one CSR, you will have to pay for an additional user license for each additional CSR you put on your support desk.

 

So as for free support desk software out there, buyer beware, look before you leap, research and compare.

 

I have by no means listed all the support desk software available.  I used the three above because I have used each of them and they are representative of a wide range of what you can find on your own just doing a GOOGLE search for “Online Support Desk”.

some idea of what’s required to provide really good customer support online.

Whether you are assisting your customers through your support desk email tickets, live online help chat, in a support forum or even on a phone call, all of the following are attributes a Customer Service Representative needs to develop and continue refining:

•    Relating with customers: being understanding of where the customer is coming from, or their attitude when submitting their inquiry.  Let them know you understand what ever their feeling and why they may feel that way, and that you are going to the very best you can to help them.

•    Attitude with customers: the ability to be positive, objective and tolerant.  For every customer you assist, there is an angel or attitude from which they are approaching the issue they need help with. It actually helps for you to physically smile as you are composing your reply, whether it is through a support ticket or actually on the phone with the customer.

•    Reading customer needs: the ability to see and understand the needs and interests of customers. Try to read between the lines if the customer is not making themselves clear in their request.  ASK QUESTIONS to ferret out the real issue.

•    Be patient with your customers: putting across the idea that you really don’t have the time or your in a hurry and need to get back to other things is one of the quickest way to alienate your customer.

•    Prejudice/bias index: the degree of prejudice or bias in attitudes toward others – Leave your prejudices at the door. There simply is no place for them in customer support. (Or any place else in my opinion.)

•    Valuing future business: the ability to have a realistic attitude about future business with customers is ABSOLUTELY necessary for you to consciously promote yourself and your company as having your customer’s best interest at heart.

•    Listening to customers: if your are reading a support ticket, again you need to try to see if there is more to the inquiry that just what is written.  On the phone, it is of course considerably easier to hear if there may be more behind the question.

•    Developing a response: how well one can construct alternatives which address issues in a clear, understandable manner is very important. This is of course where Pre-defined responses can help immensely. But don’t count on a canned response being the perfect answer every time. If you have a pre-defined response that seems to fit the inquiry, take the time to edit the pre-defined response so it really suits the issue and fits the customer. Personalize it with their name where possible.

•    Evaluating what is said: the ability to focus on crucial issues in an objective manner.

•    Handling customer rejection: whether a customer rejects your solution or a product you are recommending, try to get to the reason for the rejection or objection and formulate another solution.

•    Self-control: especially with seemingly rude or irate customers, (We all get them some time), you are the one that has to maintain control of yourself.  Let the customer vent if they need to and the calm them with assurances that you are going to do everything humanly possible to rectify the situation or provide a solution that will satisfy them.

•    Job related attitudes: attention to policies & procedures will prevent you from not only getting in over your head, (Escalate a ticket if you can’t solve the issue), but usually save you and the customer time in the long run.

•    Meeting established standards: you need to establish standards for how you are going to handle support for your business even if it is only you when you are just getting started.

•    Problem solving capacities: such as seeing potential problems, using common sense, evaluating what to do – all of this will help you head off future problems.

•    Attention to concrete detail: be as specific and detailed in your responses as necessary.  Short cutting a support reply to a customer only leads to more work when they not only feel like you didn’t answer their question, but only lead them to have to ask more.

•    Personal work attitudes: when working support, it’s better see yourself as a SUPER HERO because ultimately that is how you want your customers to remember you

1.    Big or small, they want to posture themselves through their online presence to at least appear they are really in business and NEED a support desk to handle the business volume all their products require. Having a support desk makes you look more professional in the way you do business.

Having a helpdesk is one of the main keys to high customer satisfaction though customer support. Your customers need to contact you for a variety of reasons. Maybe they've lost the password to your website? Maybe a hard drive burned out and they need to download the product they purchased from you again. Maybe they purchased the wrong item and need a return? Maybe they can't figure out how to properly install the software you sold them? Of course there are many other reasons that vary from product to product.

2.    When a prospect sees an online marketer has a support desk, there is a comfort level reached by the prospect in knowing there is a way of contacting the seller after purchase and a perceived notion they will get product support.

3.    Because it is unwise for even the smallest business to publish their email address on their sites due to nasty email harvesting robots picking up their email addresses and then send their spam to those publicly available email addresses.

4.    Email is no way for any business owner to provide support that is serious about building their business. Without a support desk system, your business seems less professional than your competitors that do have a support desk and most email programs don’t provide the flexibility of a support desk system required to professionally handle support inquiries in a traceable, timely and organized manner.

5.    A server side support desk software system helps keep all of your support issues together and searchable by several criteria – including all tickets per customer. No more disjointed communications or the old “Hey, didn’t he already ask that question”?  Or “Didn’t I already answer this customer on this issue last month”?

6.    When different customers keep submitting the same or very similar questions, some help desk systems can take these repetitive question or inquiries and make them into an FAQ “Frequently Asked Questions” page(s), thus saving your customers and you time because the answer will already be provided for them before they have even asked the question.

7.    FAQ’s, Pre-defined Support Replies or elements, canned live help chat replies and Knowledge Base Answers can not only help you save time, they can all help you to make additional sales.

8.    Hopefully your business has or will grow and you have will need additional support personnel.

What would happen if you had more than one Customer Support Representative working to resolve helpdesk issues? How would CSR-A know that CSR-B has already resolved this particular customer's issue? By having them share the same email account to receive and respond to issues? Certainly not.

How would you keep them from working on the same issue at the same time and therefore duplicate the effort? What if CSR-A solved an issue virtually identical to a support ticket from a different customer CSR-B is currently working on? How would CSR-B know this issue's already been resolved, so he could use this information to resolve his issue?  Again, a fully functional support/help desk is the obvious answer.

There are plenty of help desk server side software scripts on the market. They range from free to far more than you may need or want to spend for your businesses support needs! Some work, and unfortunately some don’t work so well. I know of some membership site scripts have a built in help desk system, but unfortunately these are usually the more expensive membership scripts and their built in help desk modules fall short on the features compared to a good CRM or Help Desk software.

The bottom line here is with all of the feature rich and robust support desk and CRM systems that are available online for FREE, there really is no excuse for any business, online or off line, regardless of how small, not to at least be using a support desk to provide fast and efficient customer support and service.

Customer support, no matter what your company provides is critical to customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction when combined with relationship building creates customer loyalty. The higher percentage of customer loyalty your business has, the more repeat business you’ll get. Don’t ever forget customer satisfaction alone will not sustain your business for the long term. It’s customer loyalty that is THE crucial factor for the long term success of any business enterprise.

Why Provide Customer Support
That is a reasonable question and deserves a reasonable answer.
The Short Answer
“The reason smart business people provide customer support and service is because their customers are the life blood of their business”.  Period! That’s a pretty simple answer; right?

And here’s a quote from Warren Buffett, a man most would say has done pretty well as a self made business man:
“It takes 20 years to build a good reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it.” Another simple truth!

So in considering the obvious truth in the statement and quote above, a reasonable person might think, “Then every business should not only provide excellent customer service and support but at the same time they should be striving to maintain and constantly improve upon their customer relations and businesses reputation. Right?

Not so fast. While common sense tells us that the statements above are certainly true; why then are there are there so many small business owners not providing any kind of customer service or support. Of course there are those that are providing what they consider support, but for the most part they are failing at it miserably.  And what’s more it’s costing them money to fail at it.

In most cases it’s because they don’t think they are failing. Otherwise they would change their ways. But what then could be their reason for not providing excellent support or worse, none at all?

Why indeed! Obviously either those individuals or companies have lost site of the simple truth that, without providing support it wont be long before their customers wont support them.

So for all intent and purposes, without providing support services or better yet excellent service and support, they are unknowingly going into business just to put themselves out of business.

The rest of the answer is: Attitude . . . .
See It As A Cost, Necessary Evil, or Drudgery? Then You Lose!
Neither this section, nor any section of this guide is intended to brow beat anyone, especially you. But if you do happen to relate to any the information herein, please at least consider it food for thought.  Take it in the manner which it is intended.  It’s intended to be a constructive look in the mirror but only if it’s the real you in the reflection – Think about it 

However this is just as good a place as any to tell you, I shoot straight from the hip, don’t pull any punches and I’m known for being brutally honest when necessary.  I will find it necessary from time to time in this guide to bring all of those attributes to bear, but that is only because I am so passionate about there being no excuse for providing anything less than excellent customer support at a profit.

You’re Answering a Call for Help

A request for support should not just be considered a cry for help. It should be considered an opportunity to provide help to someone that has already helped you by purchasing your product(s) or service(s). Why?  Because #1. Your customer is providing you with an opportunity to demonstrate you are the provider or vendor they want to continue to buy from. And #2. They deserve it.
Are You As Happy To Support It As You Were To Sell It?
If any business person can’t bring themselves to be just as happy to help a customer with the product they bought from his/her business, as the business person was to sell the product to the customer, then one of 3 things needs to happen with that business person:
1. They need an attitude adjustment, (which hopefully this guide will help some of the “Needy” to accomplish).
2. If the attitude adjustment is just not possible at the time, they need to graciously pass the customer off to someone with the right attitude, (If at all possible).
3. If they just can’t find it in themselves to be as happy to help a customer with a service or support issue as they were to sell them the product/service, they need to fall back, regroup and start asking themselves questions like: “Am I really cut out to be in business for myself”? . . . OR . . . “Am I really cut out for customer support”?

Actually there are several variables that can come into play with each of the necessary steps above.  But when you think about it, those three choices are ultimately the only options a person has in that situation.

I will be covering the different variables that affect how each of the above options may vary but still ultimately be accomplished without ever getting to the wrong answer for number 3. For now let’s continue on with why you should provide customer support.
The 3 Primary Reasons To Provide Support
1. Building A Good Reputation Means Sales – EASY Sales!
The first reason to provide customer support is to prove yourself in the eye of your customer that you have a GOOD reputation. The reputation of your business and therefore your reputation as a professional business person is reason number 1 for why any business should provide the best customer support possible. 

Can you personally think of a company that has a bad reputation for bad support?  If you own a computer then you probably can.  And regardless of whether you learned about their bad support first hand or from the negative report of a friend or colleague, how likely are you to do business with that company/business?

Every business study makes the point that finding a new customer will costs significantly more than making repeat sales to existing customers or sales to customers “referred/recommended” by existing customers. So yes the good reputation you build by providing good support does mean additional sales to your business but the really great part is it means easy, less expensive sales for your business.

2. Good Customer Support Keeps Sales Sold. Refunds!  Don’t ya just love’m? There are a number of things to consider when thinking about returns or refunds but the basic thought is, “Customer Support can keep sales sold”. Let’s face it; one refund/return can equal the cost of 2 to 4 sales. OUCH!

Certainly then it should be obvious that Customer Support should be charged with reducing the number of returns.  If your product has an unconditional “No Questions Ask” policy then it is the job of support to work to retain that customer’s loyalty on a best efforts basis.  The cost of losing the customers loyalty on top of the cost of the refund usually means losing all future purchases by that customer to your competition.

While using a support desk can save time and money, and is suitable for most support issues, it’s a proven fact that most dissatisfied customer want to talk to a live customer service representative. That is something you may want to at least consider as an option for reducing refunds/returns or handling especially long solutions.  It takes far less time to give some one an answer or solution over the phone than deliver the same thing in written form and it takes a couple of pages.

The point with returns is, if you do all you can honestly do to reduce refunds/returns then you are probably doing more to retain customer loyalty than your competitor.  Or at least you should hope that is the case. The fact is there are people out there on the super information highway that make a concerted effort to find unconditional money back guarantees just to they can demand the refunds and keep the free product.  That fact just comes with the territory if you offer that kind of no questions ask refund policy.  If you don’t, your good customer service can reduce your number or refunds.

3. Support Doesn’t Have To Cost A Dime. With all of the free support desk software products and systems, and online live chat support systems that is available these days, your actual online support system doesn't have to cost you anything but the time to set it up.  I will cover the different server software programs that are available in a later chapter.

If you are an online or offline marketer who is just starting to get your business going, you don't have to immediately go to outsourcing your support or hiring someone to handle support. The technologies that are available can simplify handling customer support so one individual can handle it all with a free support system.

As well, if your system is free and you set it up with as much information as possible in your knowledge base and FAQ’s, you then have a free support system that will handle much of your support for you.

Using free online support system that makes it simple for your customers to get the information they need allows you can eliminate the 2 primary reasons many small business and home based business owners avoid offering any kind of support online; system cost and time. While this doesn't mean you will never have to answer a support ticket, (And even some of that can be automated to a certain extent), will free up even more time from providing support that you can put into marketing, sales and other day to day operations.

However, if you are a sole proprietor and operate your business without even one assistant, your time is worth more money.  Even with computer technology saving time compared to what business operations did pre-computer era, you are required to wear the hats of and do the jobs several employees would normally be doing.  So at the very least you want to at least break even on “$pending” the time you have to devote to support based on the what you have valued your per hour worth. Ideally you should actually be able to make a profit on the time you spend supporting your customers.

Here’s SIMPLIFIED Example: If you take 20 man hours to produce say an information product or software, another 10 man hours to ramp up for you product launch and another 10 man hours to put your marketing plan in place for your product launch; then you have a total of 40 man yours into getting your idea from concept to market.

If then in the next 40 man hours you sell 100 units of your product at $47.00ea that’s $4,700.00 for an 80 man hour profit cycle. $4,700.00 ÷ 80/hrs = $ 58.75 per hour as your per hour value based on an 80 man hour profit cycle.

Then let’s say on 100 units sold you spend a total of 5 man hours during your next 80 man hour profit cycle helping customers with your previous product sale. Being valued at $58.75 per hour you lose the gross sales amount equal to 6.75 product sales. How are you going to make that loss up and turn it into a profit? Let’s take a look.
Lacing Your Service Replies with Money Makers
Here is one of the keys to turning your support desk into a profit center.

This technique requires you do 3 things in preparation for replying to your support tickets. This technique requires some forethought and planning to accomplish your goal; making money providing support for your customers. I will provide the structure for these pre-defined support ticket replies in a later chapter. 

Whether you are working with a support desk system that has pre-defined email features or not, you can seriously reduce the amount of time you spend answering repetitive support questions by writing and building a pre-defined reply email database. By the way, the same concepts apply to canned responses you can use in free live help chat systems.
Prefabricating Support Replies for Profit:
1. Research, locate and categorize other products of your own, Private Label Products or affiliate products that will compliment or add to the different aspects of your product the customer is inquiring about.

2. Write your pre-defined reply emails for your product in separate text documents, then name them and file them by category in appropriately named folders on your computer.

3. From your pre-defined reply emails that address specific questions about your product, copy the paragraph or two that recommends the complimenting product for that situation and file it in a sub-folder or your “Pre-Defined Emails” folder and name the sub-folder “Pre-Defined Email Reply Elements”.

I will be expanding on the above strategies and more later.

If your support system has Pre-Defined Email Database features, you will want to categorize and load them into that database.  If not you will need to database them yourself locally.  I will show you a little technique I use to make your local database pre-defined system work almost as fast a support desk with a pre-defined email database feature.

You want the link to your complimenting product or affiliate product as an anchor text link in your replies.  If it is a link to an affiliate offer, it makes sense to have the link cloaked as well. I will cover how to structure your pre-defined email replies and reply elements in a later chapter.
The Pay Off For Supplying Customer Support
By addressing and providing a solution to your customer’s or prospect’s support issues, questions and hopefully even pre-sale inquiries and including a testimonial endorsement recommending a complimentary product you make a profit on, you have significantly increased your potential to make profit with your support desk.

The thing you need to be aware of is: when you recommend a product that compliments the product involving the support question, the ideal situation is the recommended product will bring you twice the profit as the original product.

The recommended product could be the OTO, (One Time Offer) the customer did not buy when the originally purchased the primary product in question, or anything else that has double the profit potential of the original product sale; by doing so you have improved you potential of recovering your losses and even making additional profits by a factor of 2.

But the real key to this support up-sell strategy is to never recommend something you have not actually tried/experienced yourself.  Just because it looks good or pays a lot and the offer for the recommended product has extremely well written sales copy, you can be cutting your own throat if you recommend something unseen and untested. 
For example: The fact that an affiliate product pays a high commission rate shouldn’t cloud your judgment as to whether or not you should recommend the affiliate product. 

Your REPUTATION is on the line here.  Plus you want to be able to make recommendations based on something in particular that you benefited from, as a result of using the recommended product yourself. Otherwise you’re basically selling a lie.

Recommending other products in your support replies, done properly can also cause you to profit in non-monetary ways that can have long term pay off potential as well.
A Warning about the Automation Trap
While automated support supplies or pre-defined email responses can save you a ton of time, and they are prepared to look as though each of them was a personal reply just for that one customer, you don’t want to over do using them or rely on them for every support inquiry you get.  Certainly you will get inquiries that your pre-defined replies don’t address adequately. 

If an inquiry requires you actually type a reply to a support ticket, you can usually transition from your answer to a ‘pre-defined element’ that recommends a complimenting product that will serve the same purpose.  I’ll be covering structuring your support ticket replies in a later chapter. 

For now, I just want to be sure you understand that every single customer support inquiry on a particular subject is an opportunity for you to do 3 things that can improve your potential of profiting from your support desk:

1. Demonstrate that you sincerely care about your customer

2. Build trust in your business to increase customer loyalty

3. Soft sell another product and make more money through recommending additional products that are suitable solutions for the issue that you honestly believe will be in your customers best interest.

Now I know if you are new to Internet marketing, you may be wondering just how it is you are supposed to come up with these products that compliment yours if you haven’t developed them yet. The answer is you don’t necessarily have to come up with the additional products you recommend.
